At Hospice Djursland, many patients ironically get better when leaving the somatic hospital and getting closer to nature

In Denmark, we consider a healing environment and effectiveness to be partners that walk hand in hand, rather than opposites

Indeed, Scandinavia has realized that architectural quality can be part of the economic efficiency - good hospital design = shorter stays

Integrate technology for maximum efficiency and relieving staff - but without making the hospital feel like a machine.

Every patient group requires a hospital’s design to command special architectural attention - consider who will come there:

For example using landscape and green settings, for people’s physical and mental well-being, but also to create sense in complex designs

We encourage architects to help define standards before they become the rules, not to create form but performance!

Hospital design should also help create trust & interaction between staff and patients - like in Oslo, where they meet literally at eyelevel

Another place where standards can be positive is in working environments - bringing daylight to all functions of hospitals, not just wards

We have worked much with developing standards via user-involvment and evidence-based design - fx. single-bed wards focused on patients.

Sustainable design objectives should lead to building-integrated humanity, rather than add-on solutions, so technology alone will not do it

We design based on knowledge of how people navigate and form a ”mental map” of the premises in their brains, to unity small and large spaces

Hospitals are communities in themselves, and should encourage more interaction - connecting people, and inspiring them.

Right - the public groundfloor should be a direct analogy to the urban street, which is familiar to all.

Designing the super-large structures like a city, we can enable intuitive and autonomous wayfinding for all users - because it makes sense:

And it's not just about patients, also staff - large-scale hands-on user involvement is a way to assure that designs work, and feel right:

We describe the large hospitals as the cathedrals of the welfare society, but these major structures are broken down into fathomable units.

Hospitals are decreasing in number, but increasing in size - the first step is understanding we can't simply scale up yesterday's solutions.
