Last week we bought a used washer/dryer set. We knew the dryer wasn’t heating. I’ve since taken apart the dryer several times, used a multimeter to check continuity, replaced 3 parts, and replaced the power cord. The dryer is now heating. I’ve never felt so accomplished #heckyeah
The U.S. remains stubbornly behind on foreign language education. But juggling multiple languages at an early age strengthens cognitive processes. And learning a new language fosters cross-cultural understanding, too. A piece I edited for @edutopia. #WorldLanguages
In a 2017 study, students silenced cell phones, stashed them away, ignored them outright. Silently, the phones fought back. I found it fascinating. My new piece for @Edutopia.
STAAR test day was long & stressful for everyone. But I’ll never forget my students’ proud, confident faces as they displayed the writing skills we had worked on all year. Sometimes students’ growth is invisible, until suddenly you find yourself looking up to them. #proudteacher
My favorite photo of my brother & me is from when we were 4 & 1. He sat in a mini La-Z-Boy chair with his legs clamped around my torso as I grasped a nearby table and tried to escape. Big brother wasn’t bullying; he just wanted to read a book to his wiggly baby sister! #cnftweet
When I first met my husband, we were on a van ride to summer camp. I don’t remember meeting him, but he remembers reading the 7th Harry Potter book over my shoulder. We now agree that either one of us not liking Harry Potter would have been a dealbreaker. #nerdlove#cnftweet
When a pair of my ESL students finished their work early today, I invited them to free write in their notebooks. “Oh, THANK YOU, Mrs. Jones! Writing is so fun!” they beamed. Their delight actually caught me off guard. What did I do right, and how can I do it again?! #CNFtweet
“¿A mi? ¿Y yo? ¿Mi turno?” squealed the bouncing kindergarteners as I entered Ms. Koch’s class. I only picked up the same 3 students for literacy tutoring each day, and yet they all hoped for a chance. Little did the others know how lucky they were to not need tutoring. #cnftweet
My Afghani student loves to share her reflective writing pieces with me. Though they’re peppered with numerous language-learner errors, her persistent theme is always clear: “Life is good. Life is important. All people are important. Love each other.” Write on, sister. #cnftweet
