From Pain to Podium: The Inspiring Story of Sharmila Dhankar ๐ฎ๐ณ
She was beaten. She was abandoned. She was told life had nothing more to offer. But she chose to fight ๐ฎ๐ณโค๏ธ
My mother was blind, my father was a farmer, and we barely had enough to survive. Life was never easy.
That is how Sharmila Dhankar remembers her childhood.
Polio struck when she was just 2 years old. At19, she was married only to suffer years of horrific domestic violence. One night, her husband beat her from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. before throwing her out of the house.
She never went back.
Many would have lost hope. Sharmila found strength.
After her second marriage, her husband Ajit Singh introduced her to para sports. It changed her life forever.
Sport has given me a second birth, she says.
She began training at 34 under coach Tek Chand. Just one year later, she won gold at the Para National Championships with a national record.
The sacrifices didn't stop there. To keep her dream alive, her family sold their house and moved into rented accommodation so she could continue competing.
This week, every tear, every sacrifice, and every setback turned into history.
๐ Sharmila Dhankar won GOLD in the Women's Shot Put F57 at the Commonwealth Games with a season-best throw of 9.81m.
With that throw, she became:
๐ฎ๐ณ India's first-ever Commonwealth Games para athletics gold medallist.
๐ฎ๐ณ The athlete who ended India's 20-year wait for a para athletics medal at the Commonwealth Games.
๐ฎ๐ณ Part of a historic double podium as Shilpa Shyla won bronze, marking India's first two medals in the same para athletics event.
Today, Sharmila has just one dream not fame, not glory.
She wants to buy back a home.
And she wants to give her daughters the life she never had.
Some champions don't just win medals...
They rewrite destinyโค๏ธ๐ฎ๐ณ
