A man dating a single mother should understand that he is not automatically the father of her child. But that doesn't mean he should have no authority to correct a child who is living under the same roof with him.

A relationship is about partnership, and partnership requires mutual respect. If a woman expects a man to accept the responsibilities that come with dating her, she should also be willing to discuss the responsibilities and boundaries that come with raising a child together.

However, there is a difference between correcting a child and beating a child. A man doesn't have to use violence to demonstrate authority, and no child should be subjected to physical abuse.

The woman also needs to understand that constantly undermining her partner whenever he tries to address a child's unacceptable behaviour can create serious problems in the relationship. At the same time, the man must understand that being a partner doesn't give him unlimited power over someone else's child.

The real issue here is not who has the greater authority. It is whether two adults can agree on how to raise a child, respect each other's boundaries and protect the child's well-being.

If they cannot agree on something as fundamental as this, ending the relationship may be the most sensible decision. A child should not have to live in the middle of a constant power struggle between two adults.
