bell hooks said that White people will meet a Black person who completely challenges every racial stereotype that they have, but rather than giving up the stereotypes, they create a special category for that person and say, things like “Well, you’re not like other Black people”, instead of saying, “My ideas of Black people were too narrow”.
This is called “subtyping” and it leads to the survival of negative stereotypes because the new category individual who’s supposedly “not like the others” is mentally isolated from the group.
What this shows is that bigotry is all about protecting an existing hierarchy and it doesn’t matter much whether a person is exposed to other people or not. Which is why meeting intelligent, kind, accomplished, or complex Black people does not dismantle prejudice if someone is emotionally invested in keeping the stereotype intact.
Exposure to facts and figures doesn’t change the situation either. Someone can know the statistics on crime, education, poverty, or discrimination and still keep racial stereotypes because the stereotype preserves a sense of superiority and avoids confronting historical responsibility.
This is part of why bell hooks further argued that racism is emotional and ideological more than just purely ignorant, which is then why facts by themselves usually do not overcome a worldview that a person is motivated to preserve.
She hates how much she loves you
So she hates that she loves you
So she hates the part of her you bring out
So in reality she hates herself and hates you for loving her
So she really just hates herself and you have nothing to do with it.
You’re just there.
You just happened to bring out a side of her she hates.
And really that’s the side she needs to love most because it’s the side of herself she hides from and denies is in there
Hate and love are the opposite side of the same coin
To say you hate someone is to say you love them in a perverse sense
And to say you love someone is to also say that you have the capacity to also hate them
If you hate how much you love someone then the solution to stop hating them is to love yourself more than you hate them.
And by doing so you end up loving them because love destroys hate
Reality is a trip isn’t it?
What a strange world we live in.
God has a strange sense of humor.
Don’t let anyone brainwash you into hating someone who has done nothing to you.
It’s easy to absorb other people’s opinions, especially when they come from those we trust. Stories get passed around, narratives get twisted, and before you know it, you’re carrying feelings that were never yours to begin with. But not every opinion deserves your agreement, and not every judgment deserves your belief. You owe it to yourself to see people through your own eyes, not through someone else’s bias.
Think about it. How many people have been misunderstood, misrepresented, or reduced to someone else’s version of them? Choosing not to hate without reason isn’t ignorance, it’s awareness. It’s the courage to think for yourself in a world that constantly tries to decide for you. Your judgment should come from experience, not influence.
