Don't really think anybody will see this here, but I just wanted to share this transition timeline video I made to celebrate nearly 2 years of estrogen in my body. I'm proud of it. July 25th is my 2 year anniversary 🩵🩷🤍🩷🩵
I understand the gnawing gut impulse to find validation, but we do not need to be turning ourselves inside out trying to justify every crevice of our personalities. Your preferences can safely remain trivial inside your head if you have an issue with them being questioned
Folks, I'm begging people with "preferences" to step back and take a breath. Sometimes the context doesn't directly call upon you to draft some kind of ethical political justification or whatever. Just please resist the urge to send that tweet, make that response video, etc.
The thing about exclusionary dating “preferences” (specifically against marginalized groups) is that you can *theoretically* live your entire life without anyone ever finding out about it. However, people who have these preferences constantly talk about them, and show their asses
It's giving Uber Eats/Doordash/Grubhub discourse
Sometimes you just gotta STFU and sit with your decisions, feelings, and thoughts. You'll find that your life truly remains unchanged if you can just avoid impulsively bringing attention upon yourself and your [bad] preferences
@idkijustthibk Most of my analysis has mostly been informed by seeing/observing videos and asking myself "why does this video make me feel icky, and why does that video seem like neat helpful advice?" as well as my time in sex work getting "advice" from strangers
@idkijustthibk For sure! that's clear and I agree! Seeking advice in general is chill
I usually think about this through the lens of spaces like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok more than forums like reddit because they feel so much louder and impersonal while also explaining "passing"
@idkijustthibk I *personally* wanted advice about makeup so I could have that skill as a part of my transition. It's a tool I have at my disposal to customize and boost myself, and NOT a tool for fitting into some kind of amorphous abstract subjective "authenticity"
@idkijustthibk for sure the seeking advice part isn't a bad thing at all. I personally think it's when we veer into "I wanna pass" instead of "here's something I wanna learn for myself" that content starts to reflect back at us an image for replication rather than skills/tools for cusomization
Piercings are not “dressing like a woman”. Neither are pink shirts. There are homophobic republicans with less strict adherence to “masculinity” than this bullshit.
Fuck the whole genre tbh. You give advice to individuals who solicit advice from you. My passing advice? Observe people whose appearance you like or aspire to, and emulate. Maybe if it’s not possible for your body, seek other options.
Guides just keep taking (pop)culturally-informed images/perceptions of men/women/enbies and imbuing them with some kind of abstract Quintessential Authentic Man-ness/Woman-ness/Enby-ness which is interpreted as actually NOT abstract as if there's an ✨️objective authentic(ity)✨
We're reifying "passing" instead of just trying to help individual people out!!! We don't need to track down the essence of passing! 😱
We can just say "hey, do you hate your leg hair? Yeah, me too. Here are some tips..." and then let people personalize/customize from there
The use of "passing" as a system of explicit group-defining characteristics rather than as a simplified (possibly post-hoc?) description of an individual makes passing into a homogenized image rather than a series of autonomous individual choices
This abstraction of the audience is how we go from "here's a thing *you* (individual) might like or find helpful for your transition" (e.g. makeup, shaving, clothing types and choices, etc.) to "alright, y'all, this is how to pass" (drawing the borders between passing and not)
@AllStatesAreBad I made falafel with my chickpeas recently. I don't normally like to eat the same thing more than 2 days in a row, but I ate that shit for 4 consecutive days :3
My manager legit once said to my face "I don't understand why anyone would want to be a woman. Being a woman is horrible."
Ma'am, get this...
it doesn't have to be 😱
despite our oppression under patriarchy, I don't actually have to subscribe to it as part of my womanliness 💖
I once had a transmasc person say “I can’t imagine why anyone would wanna be a woman”. And statements like this are often rooted in a lot of bad experiences with misogyny and transphobia, but even when they’re not tainted by transmisogyny, they still come with seeing trans women-
@idkijustthibk you know that simple classroom exercise where a teacher gets kids to draw a house and then tells the kids not everyone in the world lives in a box with 1 front door, 2 windows, and a pointy roof?
This discourse always feels like people insisting their drawing is The One
