The League of Filipino Students (LFS) has criticized Sen. Robinhood Padilla’s renewed proposal to lower the minimum age of criminal responsibility to 10 years old, calling it an “unscientific” response to recent school violence incidents.

LFS chairperson Gabriel Magtibay said the proposal wrongly scapegoats the youth instead of addressing what the group described as a deeper “culture of violence and impunity” in society. He said authorities should focus on systemic issues rather than criminalizing children.

The group urged lawmakers to strengthen public education, increase support for schools and address structural problems contributing to youth violence, instead of pushing for harsher penalties for minors.
