I have a friend who is trying to get their first job in tech this year.
If you hire early-career (frontend or full stack) software engineers, what are you looking for on resumes and in portfolios?

The tech job market has never been more polarized:
Demand for senior tech workers has never been higher, compensation is hitting all-time highs, globally.
New grad and junior folks have never had such a hard time getting that first job.
A thread on what's happening and why:
on everything. i really think about my Google experience.
my question - in hindsight - was extremely difficult.
i would struggle with it now - and i have 5-6+ years of experience across the stack. lead system design interviews daily.
... and it was for an internship.
how many technical interviews have i failed bc i was deliberately given harder problems to solve and not offered any help or hints? the world may never know

GHC, one of the largest conferences for women in tech focused on research & career, cancels their virtual career fair within a week of notice
Many of their attendees are college students and they paid $800 for the career fair
Let’s just say they are not thrilled 😬
Remember when the entire tech industry pretend to care about Black people for a couple weeks?
I'm just wondering if anything meaningful came from that.
Tell me: have any policies at your workplaces changed? Know any Black job seekers who got interviews? Anything else?
Call for talk submissions (paid)!
@yougotthisconf will be back again in January (virtually). Now's your chance to submit a talk! Deadline: September 30th.
Beginner speakers welcome to apply.

Ok, but sometimes I don't know if everybody gets it? I went from not owning a computer to actually being able to write computer programs. Do you see the ✨magic✨ in that last sentence???
”What members of underrepresented groups in tech often need most is opportunity and visibility, not advice. They have to work extremely hard and be extremely good at what they do to combat the systemic privilege and unconscious bias at play in our work environments.”
