Today @GeoIgnite 2022 we provide an overview of geospatial tools used to study permafrost thaw phenomena in the Northwest Territories across different scales. Our goal is to better understand the distribution, dynamics and implications of rapidly evolving landslides. A 🧵
NWT landscapes are rapidly changing, such as the Willow River watershed near Aklavik. These sites require monitoring to track change. In-depth CBC article about sites like these and the local impacts: https://t.co/sFhWjqbTkO
Our @esricanada story map summarizing some of our efforts monitoring permafrost thaw across the northwestern Arctic is based on a lot of remote sensing data (#drone, #LiDAR, #Landsat/Sentinel). Together these data help us better understand the what, when, where, and why #SciComm
Thawing #permafrost is changing the land and water of northwestern #Canada 🇨🇦
❄️ Research and Indigenous partners have been studying the impacts of these landslides on stream networks.

"Think of permafrost as having personalities." How permafrost affects the land varies widely across the NWT, but we haven't had a detailed map. Soon we might. https://t.co/ej7rjZcjuS
There are only a few #drone /RPAS mapping case studies based on long-endurance Beyond Visual Line of Sight (#BVLOS) operations. Excited to present our Arctic highway + permafrost + vegetation project at #AerialEvolution22, with performance+accuracy stats & Northern applications
It takes a team to get this done so a huge thank you to the environmental monitors, Guardians, pilots, and academic collaborators that keep us safe and guide our work. @NRCan PCSP provided heli support. Now it’s data crunching and (open) data publishing time!
That’s a wrap for 2022 NWT permafrost thaw monitoring! @cpa_acp Starting in Nahanni NP to assess “southern” thaw slumps early July (Lat 60-63N) ended yesterday with slumps/peatlands in the Beaufort Delta (66-69N). Seen a lot of landscape diversity along 1000’s of km transects👇
@tephrafan's group (feat @WedgeIceQc @JurvdS) have been studying the changing permafrost conditions in the central Mackenzie Valley, NWT. They presented a synthesis of studies covering degrading dendritic peat plateaus and permafrost mass-wasting in the river valley.
@DLRdatascience @AWI_de@GIScienceHD Thank you, sounds really interesting. Here’s a science comm. story map of our permafrost monitoring work near Aklavik and Fort McPherson: https://t.co/sihwzaTZA3
@DLRdatascience @AWI_de@GIScienceHD Any details of this trip? Will be on the ground for our annual drone surveys of permafrost thaw in this area (since 2015)
That’s a wrap for the North Yukon Permafrost Conf @cpa_acp Excellent field trip @tephrafan covering history of Yukon River and Klondike Icefields, with Ice Age steppe bison and horse fossils to boot!
