Junko Furuta (古田 順子, 1971–1989) was a Japanese high school student who became the victim of one of Japan’s most notorious criminal cases.
Her abduction, torture, and murder in late 1988 shocked the nation and prompted debate over juvenile justice and media ethics in reporting violent crimes.
Furuta was described as a diligent and cheerful student who worked part-time after school and planned to join an electronics retailer after graduation.
In November 1988, she was kidnapped on her way home by four male classmates, one of whom held a grudge after she rejected his advances.
Over a 40-day period (November 25, 1988 – January 4, 1989), Furuta was imprisoned in a house in Adachi, Tokyo. She was subjected to severe physical and sexual violence by the four teenagers and others they invited.
Her captors ultimately killed her and sealed her remains in a concrete-filled oil drum later discovered in Koto Ward, Tokyo.
Police discovered Furuta’s remains following a confession related to another assault case. The perpetrators were minors at the time and charged with “causing bodily injury resulting in death” rather than murder.
Sentences ranged from several to twenty years’ imprisonment. Public outrage grew over the perceived leniency, and the case spurred calls for reform in Japan’s handling of juvenile offenders.
All four offenders were eventually released, with some later re-arrested for unrelated crimes. Furuta’s case remains widely discussed in Japan’s media, criminology studies, and online forums as a symbol of extreme youth violence and judicial controversy.
It inspired the 2004 film Concrete and subsequent dramatizations exploring the social failures that allowed the crime to occur.
At age 15, Mary accepted a ride from 51-year-old Lawrence Singleton while hitchhiking in California.
He raped her, chopped off both of her forearms with a hatchet, and threw her off a 30-foot cliff believing she would die.
Instead, Mary packed her wounds with mud to slow the bleeding, climbed back up the cliff without arms, and walked miles until she found help.
She survived and later testified against him in court.
