My thoughts on the severe weather event yesterday.

It is tough on the messaging side when addressing the public about severe weather when things don’t verify exactly how we expect.

Yes, there was significant severe weather yesterday.

However, it did not go as expected. We had what appears to be one strong/violent tornado.

The messaging beforehand was numerous strong tornadoes. Widespread area, very alarming forecast.

This was warranted given the data we had.

We can only provide what information we truly understand to the public.

Those of us in the weather world understand how fickle the atmosphere really is.

Too much dry air aloft, lack of forcing, storm mode, etc.

The issue is much of the general public does not, it’s just a bust in their eyes.

“There they go again, hyping up them darn storms!”

We have so much work to do on the forecasting and messaging side. Can’t dwell on it too long with more severe weather today and tomorrow.

I’m exhausted and I’m sure many others are too.
