Mining Equipment & Technology
Today, modern mines generate enormous amounts of operational data. The challenge is no longer collecting data, it’s turning it into better maintenance, planning and production decisions. How are you using your data to optimize your mining operation?
@elonmusk@boringcompany@boringcompany , have you looked into the Epiroc Mobile Miner mechanical rocking cutting solution. Tunnel shapes and harder rock MPA are not as constrained to the round TBM shape that is also susceptible to ground squeezing.

China's Dominance in Rare Earths (2024–2025 data)
1. Mining & Raw Materials
- ~70% of global rare earth ore production (2024: ~240,000 tons REO out of ~350,000 tons worldwide).
- Largest deposits: Bayan Obo (Inner Mongolia) alone accounts for ~45% of global proven reserves.
2. Separation & Refining (the real bottleneck)
- 85–90% of global separation capacity.
- 95–99% of heavy rare earths (Dy, Tb, etc.) separation, especially from ionic clay deposits in southern China.
- Only major commercial-scale solvent extraction facilities outside China are Lynas (Malaysia) and MP Materials (USA), together <10% of capacity.
3. Oxide → Metal Conversion & Magnet Production
- ~90–95% of global rare earth metals and alloys production.
- ~92% of NdFeB sintered magnets (the high-performance ones used in EVs, wind turbines, defense).
- Almost 100% of separated heavy rare earth metals (Dy, Tb) that are added to magnets for high-temperature performance.
In short: China controls the entire supply chain from mine to finished magnet, with the tightest choke points being heavy REE separation and oxide-to-metal reduction. The rest of the world has <10–15% capacity at each critical stage and remains heavily import-dependent.
