I was supposed to increase my monthly mutual funds deposit from 150,000 to 200,000 naira from January next year. But I have decided to start from next month which is just a few days away.
You all know my target. 300 million naira in 10 years and a bigger goal of hitting 500 million naira before age 45 at most.
The 200,000 naira monthly deposit alone will not get me there in that timeframe, but I will be making lump sum deposits of anywhere between 1 million and 3 million naira once in a while to speed up the compounding and get me closer to that target faster.
I am sharing this to keep you all updated on my progress because this is not just my journey. It is one we are embarking on together. I have been heavily motivated recently by the lady I introduced to mutual funds less than 5 years ago who is already making over 300,000 naira monthly in interest. If she can do it, I can do more. And if I can do it, so can you.
So I am not waiting till January. I am starting now.
Most importantly, please do not invest more than 30% of your income unless you can comfortably live on whatever remains.
Do not pressure yourself into investing. The goal is consistency over a long period of time, not desperation. Invest within your means and stay the course.
Let us keep going. πͺ
Above all, love God.
I started investing in mutual funds in 2018. After one full year of investing, my total balance was approximately 412,000 naira. I had saved 360,000 naira in total and earned 52,000 naira from interest.
In 2019, my monthly interest was just 6,000 naira. It felt laughably small. I genuinely wanted to withdraw everything and move on. But I could survive without it so I left it alone and kept going.
Today, my monthly interest alone is over 220,000 naira.
That is more than what 90% of Nigerians earn as a full salary. Some civil servants who started working in 2018, the same year I started investing, still do not earn up to 220,000 naira monthly after 8 years of service.
But here is the painful truth. If they had started investing when I did, their monthly interest by now would have been more than twice their current salary. And they would have had the option to quit that job entirely. That is the power of consistency and compounding over time.
It looks small at the beginning. Embarrassingly small. But with time, the magic is genuinely mind blowing.
Do not sit on the fence. Start now. Even 5,000 or 10,000 naira monthly is enough to begin. It is not too small. Just start and thank yourself later.
Above all, love God.

If you have a 5 year investment target, here is how to work backwards from it and turn it into a monthly deposit plan.
Decide your target. How much do you want to have in 5 years? Let us use 10 million naira as an example.
Work backwards. At 16.8% per annum, to reach 10 million naira in 5 years you need to deposit approximately 110,000 naira monthly.
If 110,000 is too high, adjust your target or extend your timeline. To reach 10 million in 10 years you only need approximately 33,000 naira monthly. Same goal, more time, smaller deposit.
Automate it. Set up AutoSave on Cowrywise or PalmPay so the money leaves your account before you can spend it.
Increase your deposit whenever your income increases. Do not wait until you feel comfortable. Comfort is the enemy of compounding.
The goal is not the problem. The absence of a plan is. Set your target today and work backwards from it.
What is your 5 year investment target? I will help calculate exactly what you need to deposit monthly to get there.
Above all, love God.
