Sued His University to the Supreme Court and Won ₦20,000,000!

Case: Victor v. F.U.T.A. (2026) 8 NWLR (Pt. 2044) 33

Imagine graduating, knowing your grades were wrongly calculated, but being handed a lower class of degree than you earned. Most students would accept "fate" and move on.

Mr. Adebayo A. Victor refused to back down.

What makes this story incredible? Victor was a layman (not a lawyer), yet he personally prosecuted this case through the entire hierarchy of courts for nearly two decades.

The 19-Year Battle for a 2:1
In 2007, Victor graduated in Mechanical Engineering from FUTA, receiving a Second Class Lower.

Convinced his scores were wrongly recorded, he spent four years begging the university to re-mark 10 specific courses. The university ignored him.

In 2011, he sued. The journey was brutal:
2013: The trial court dismissed his case on a technicality. Victor appealed and won a retrial.
2017: The High Court finally ordered FUTA to re-mark his scripts. FUTA refused and appealed.

2022: Under Supreme Court pressure, FUTA finally complied and re-marked the scripts.

The Plot Twist: Victor was right all along. The independent re-marking officially upgraded his degree to a Second Class Upper. His correct certificate was physically handed to him in open court at the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court Defends Student Rights
With the degree secured, the Supreme Court turned its attention to the university’s conduct.

Led by Justice Helen Moronkeji Ogunwumiju, JSC, the apex court established a massive precedent:
The Duty of Care: While universities have academic autonomy, they owe a "Duty of Care" to their students. They must provide fair assessments and transparent complaint procedures.

The Penalty: By ignoring Victor for years and causing him to lose international scholarship opportunities, FUTA breached that duty.

The lower court had awarded Victor a mere ₦500,000. The Supreme Court threw that out as too small and reviewed the awards upward:
₦18,000,000 in General Damages for emotional distress.

₦2,000,000 in Litigation Costs.

Total Takeaway: Victor walked away with his rightful Second Class Upper degree and ₦20,000,000 in compensation.

The Big Insight
"Justice is not a fencing game where one party seeks to outsmart the other." Whether you run a university or a business, you cannot hide behind institutional bureaucracy to ignore legitimate complaints.

I was about to spend £30,000 on an MSc. in the U.K. Data Science…. Leeds Beckett University, started the travel process;TB test, CAS , etc.

One random evening, Debbie, my friend from uni, called. We were catching up… life after school and all. Told Debbie I was going to the U.K. for MSc, self-sponsored.

Few days later, Debbie called to tell me about a fully funded scholarship. She was so eager and pushy. “Wale, I’ve tried this thing, but you’re the only person I know who meets all the requirements. The bar is really high. It’s people like you they are looking for. I believe you’ll get it.”

Such audacity. Such belief in my potentials and abilities. She forwarded all the documents to me, even paid for a coaching program. All this stress for a Wale that’s already scouting for a studio apartment in Leeds.

I was reluctant. Even though I had won multiple scholarships in the past(Microsoft, Western Union etc) , I didn’t want to join thousands of applicants hustling for the few available slots. I just wanted to do the MSc, come back to Nigeria and continue building my startup .

So I dismissed Debbie. I didn’t act. I went ahead with my U.K. plans. Was already buying and saving £s.

But Debbie kept disturbing me, so I reluctantly started the scholarship application. She’d call to ask about my progress, if I had sent my transcript, share updates about the scholarship, guide me on how to pay the admission fee etc.

I finally decided to give it a shot. Spent 3 whole days putting the application together. It was a solid application nonetheless. I put in my A-game. But to be honest, I only did it for Debbie.

Then the list came out, 9,000+ applicants from 100+ countries. Only 300 were granted. That’s a 3.3% success rate. I was among.

The congratulatory email came. A fully funded scholarship. Flight ticket, visa fee, monthly stipend, tuition, accommodation, everything.

All because Debbie was selfless and believed in my potential.

If you’ll go far in life, you must have friends who believe in your dreams and potentials.... and that will put you on.. Some friends are destiny helpers sent by God. Debbie is one.

My sister-in-law is an intelligent girl. She scored 284 on her first JAMB, but couldn't get into Unilag to study medicine. The next year, she scored 320, but still no admission into Unilag (I can't explain it). I couldn't just sit back and watch her talent go to waste.

So, I got her to take the SAT exam. She prepped for only two weeks and scored 1450. We started applying for scholarships in the US, and she got two fully funded scholarships and one partial one. Last week, she went for her visa interview. In a few months, she’ll be heading to the United States.

1. I am still confused that she couldn't get into Unilag. Something is definitely wrong with our system.
2. I am happy she is going to somewhere she can truly shine and explore her full potential.
3. It's a shame we keep losing our brightest minds.
4. To be successful, you need opportunity, information and access.

The passing of H.E Akeredolu is extremely saddening. When people across his state were being massacred, he did not ask “where are the cows,” nor did he play politics with the safety of his people. He championed the formation of Amotekun, and today, the people of the region are grateful for his courage.
I will remember him for his courage, for standing up for his people and for providing leadership when it mattered the most.
May his soul rest in perfect peace.
