BREAKING: Microsoft blocks Israeli army use of its tech in mass surveillance of Palestinians.
This follows sustained public pressure, fueled in part by our investigations into Microsoft’s close relationship w/ the army. @mekomit@972mag@yuval_abraham

Statement from Oscar-winning director Hamdan Ballal:
This afternoon, nearly a year after we won the Oscar, the same settler who attacked me shortly after I returned from Los Angeles--Shem Tov Lusky--again led an attack against my home and my family. Four of my family members are currently arrested and one is in the hospital.
I invite all journalists and diplomats to come visit me and my family this Tuesday, February 17, to hear about how the situation has gotten worse in the year since we won the Oscar, as it has across the West Bank. Email me to coordinate your visit: [email protected]
Two weeks ago we managed to get a decision from the Israeli court that the area around my home is closed to non-residents, but the settlers break that order and still come with their flocks almost every day.
We call the police, they do nothing. The army comes, they do nothing. Today, Shem Tov Lusky--the settler who attacked me in my home shortly after I won the Oscar last year--came with his flock to my home. My brother called the police to report the incursion. The army came first and immediately raided our house, attacking everyone inside. Then they arrested two of my brothers, a nephew, and cousin. Another brother was badly injured and is now in the hospital.
The Israeli court decision was supposed to make things a bit quieter for us. But the opposite has been true. The settlers have ramped up their harassment and the Israeli authorities have done nothing to enforce the decision, and today they joined the settlers in the attack.
After an intense period of production, we are now thrilled to begin editing the film. Stay tuned for updates by signing up for our newsletter at the link below >>

By the time Mamdani announced his bid to become the mayor of New York City, we were the only independent filmmakers with a front-row seat to his history-making journey taking on the political establishment.
Our next film will explore how grassroots movements made this unprecedented moment possible, and what it tells us about the relationship between movement building and political power.
In the name of ‘urban renewal,’ Israel is trampling Lod’s 2,000-year-old heritage
The municipality is encouraging real estate sharks to tear up the city’s history in order to build towers that will likely drive out Palestinian residents.

“Whatever you’re reading, the reality is worse. That’s my intuition based on years of reporting on the West Bank and Gaza. What you’re reading, what you’re seeing, what manages to get out — the actual reality is worse.”

Read now in @NYMag: Paramedics, families, journalists, and survivors who fled through the checkpoints and cameras I once faced in Gaza describe an intimacy with the systems that tracked and scored them in seconds, mapping their homes and lives from afar. https://t.co/DBfVVfnC4y
“A machine could look into people’s homes, register their presence, and flag them,” writes @mrmhawish. “If we tried to live our lives as if the surveillance did not exist, it could lead to our deaths.”
If you read anything this week read @mrmhawish on life under Israeli surveillance in Gaza

I spent sixteen months reporting this story. It was deep, painful, and at times unbearable.
It follows how surveillance tech is rewriting Gaza in real time — and what it’s doing to the people inside it. Read in @NYMag

“The old admonition of authoritarian regimes everywhere—if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to be afraid of—has no meaning in Gaza.”
@mrmhawishat writes at @NYMag about life in Gaza under Israel’s all-encompassing surveillance regime.

“Israeli soldiers have described a free-for-all in Gaza and a breakdown in norms and legal constraints, with civilians killed at the whim of individual officers”
