Morocco shows up as MAR on scoreboards because FIFA's country codes do not always come from the English name.

A lot of them come from French, which is the working language FIFA has used since it was founded in Paris in 1904. Morocco in French is Le Maroc. First three letters: MAR.

And Morocco is not alone. This happens more than people realise.

Germany is GER, which tracks in English. But then you get to Ivory Coast, which shows up as CIV, from Côte d'Ivoire. Algeria is ALG from Algérie. Haiti is HAI from Haïti. Switzerland is SUI from Suisse. Spain is ESP from España. Iran appears as IRN.

The pattern runs across the entire scoreboards.Some countries are also coded based on whatever their language is.

FIFA built its codes in an era when French dominated international administration, and colonial history shaped which language a country's name was recorded in first.

That legacy is still sitting quietly on every scoreboard at this World Cup.

My friend recently took her parents on a trip to Durban. In their elderly years, they had never been there before… and to be honest, she was worried.

Her father is on 18-hour oxygen, and she kept asking herself, will he manage?But look at him… look closely. Is this even the same person?

He spent the whole day without connecting to his machine. The glow, the laughter, the happiness on his face… that’s something money can never buy.

In that moment, she didn’t just take them on a trip she gave them an experience. She saw their inner child come alive again.

And honestly… she was so proud of herself for that 🤍

🇷🇴 Costel Pantilimon has one of the most emotional stories in football. The Romanian was born into a family where his father had no hearing ability due to an accident in his childhood, while his mother also had a condition that only allowed her to hear certain sounds.

This limited their job opportunities, until an aircraft parts company hired them and changed their lives forever. At that point, his father took the opportunity to get Costel into a team and try him as a goalkeeper due to his height.

At 14, Pantilimon was called up to Romania’s youth teams and progressed all the way to the senior side, where he made 27 appearances — which eventually led to a move to Manchester City.

But the goalkeeper never forgot his difficult beginnings or his family’s sacrifices:

🗣️ “We lived in a small apartment, but if I was sitting in the living room and my mum was in the kitchen and I shouted, she would come — she heard a sound and knew it was me, but she didn’t understand it, she only perceived the sound.

The modern rise of 🇮🇹Como 1907 can be traced back to a key moment in 2017 when Michael Essien’s wife, 🇬🇭Akosua Puni Essien, stepped in to buy the struggling Italian club at auction.

At the time, Como was battling serious financial problems and risked disappearing from professional football.

Her move helped keep the historic club alive and opened the door for a new future.

Years later, Indonesian investors from the Djarum Group took over the club and began a serious rebuilding project.

Former Spain star Cesc Fàbregas later joined as a player, investor and eventually coach. In 2024 he helped the club gain promotion to Serie A as a technical assistant.

Now in 2026, Como sit in the Serie A top four and are pushing for Champions League qualification while playing in the Coppa Italia semi finals, showing how far the club has come since Puni Essien’s rescue.
