- Runs on rainfall and cellulose.
- No electricity, no fuel, no roof.
- Refuels itself, unsupervised, outdoors.
- Builds topsoil as a waste product.
- Manufactures one complete copy of itself per year.
- Powers that copy off its own body for six months.
- Converts inedible fibre into protein and four per cent fat.
- Yields around a hundred secondary products at end of life.

Meatball clearly passed on the house rules: Mozzarella is already collecting the fence-line snack tax. She is a cookie monster in mini cow form! 🍪🌾

You cannot eat grass. She can.

You cannot eat straw. She can.

You cannot eat what is left when rapeseed is pressed for its oil. She can.

You cannot make B12. She can.

You cannot make retinol out of a carrot, not properly. She can.

A tractor cannot work that slope. She can.

A mower cannot take the bracken and leave the heather. She can.

A fertiliser bag cannot hatch a dung beetle. She can.

A laboratory cannot turn rainfall into protein. She can.

She takes 0.6kg of protein a person could have eaten and hands back a kilo of it, better than what went in. Nothing else in the food system returns more than it was given.

There is a policy document open somewhere this afternoon working out how to have fewer of her.

Willem Dafoe spent much of his life without even having a pet.

Now, when he isn't making films, he returns to a small farm in the countryside outside Rome, where his days look very different from the red carpets.

Dafoe keeps alpacas, sheep, goats, chickens, turkeys and donkeys. At one point, he counted around 70 animals living there.

They aren't being raised for meat. Dafoe has explained that he keeps them largely because he enjoys their company and wants to give them a good life. The chickens and turkeys provide eggs, while the sheep and alpacas provide wool.

He has become especially fond of the alpacas. He says he knows each one individually and can recognize their different personalities.

And he doesn't simply own the farm from a distance.

Dafoe works in the vegetable garden, tends to the animals and helps with the ordinary, messy jobs that come with caring for them. During hot summer days, he sprays the animals with water and even has a small shower where the alpacas can cool themselves.

In 2026, the farm was still very much part of his life, with a newborn alpaca and baby peacocks, turkeys and sheep among its newest residents.

For an actor who can spend one day surrounded by cameras and crowds, Dafoe has found something completely different waiting for him back home.

Animals to care for, vegetables to tend, and a farm outside Rome that he simply calls his refuge.
