Message regarding Governor of National Bank’s media threat
=======•••••=======
Having watched Eyob’s yesterday media statement, I wonder if the new Governor of the National Bank truly understands what the role of a Central Bank Governor is supposed to be. In which country does a Governor of a National Bank regularly appear publicly and make threatening statements about criminal issues like money laundering? Is that really his job? These are matters for law enforcement agencies, the police, and the courts, not for those tasked with designing monetary policy and safeguarding economic stability.
A Central Bank Governor should embody integrity, calm, and technical expertise as someone who builds confidence in the financial system, not fear or political drama. It is one of the highest offices of trust and professionalism in any country. Yet here we are again, watching our top financial officials turn to public threats and emotional rhetoric as a communication strategy.
We’ve seen this before. Mamo did the same thing not long ago appearing on TV, speaking passionately, promising “strong action.” What then happened ? A few arrests, a wave of media noise, and then silence. The situation didn’t improve; in fact, it worsened. The black market thrived, inflation deepened, and public trust eroded further. Nothing truly changed.
And now the new Governor, Eyob, seems to be walking the same path issuing public threats, accusations, and fiery speeches, as if fear and intimidation could solve a deeply rooted economic and governance crisis. It’s disheartening, because this is a man entrusted with one of the most vital economic institutions in the nation. The National Bank deserves serious, measured, and disciplined leadership, not media theatrics.
A true Governor should speak through data, policy, and vision not emotion and intimidation. These recurring performances don’t project strength; they expose institutional failures and an inability to separate politics from professionalism.
What’s even more ironic is that many of those pointing fingers are entangled in the very corruption they denounce. They know the networks, the channels, the beneficiaries - because they’ve worked alongside them. The recent African Intelligence Report revealed that Eyob himself is one of those who have established a corruption empire in the country. So these televised warnings are less like justice and more like political theatre.
And now, Eyob begins his tenure as an amateur actor in a tragic movie his predecessor already performed and terribly failed. The question is: does he realize it, or will he continue to deceive himself, like his boss, imagining that he’s doing a great job while the economic ship drifts ever deeper down the rabbit hole or face the truth and change course and saves the economy from a complete catastrophe?! And Eyob can’t be an exception!
@yoniekoo@martinplaut Idiot, do you know what AI is? Super idiots, he is speaking about humaniry and your endless cruelity and atrrocities.
Genocide is undergoing in everycornee if the country by the regime and his watch dogs.
Is there any road left in Ethiopia untouched by the multitude of conflicts tearing the country apart? The recent violence along the border between the Oromia and Somali regions was not accidental, it was a calculated act, deliberately instigated by federal government agents in collusion with regional administrators. For six years, since 2018, this border had enjoyed peace and stability. Yet the moment the regime began to feel the heat of rising public discontent over economic collapse and political repression, conflict was suddenly reignited, from Moyale in the southern tip to Bordode in the east. This was not a spontaneous eruption of local tensions, but a manufactured crisis designed to divide communities and distract the public from the regime’s mounting failures.
We shall foil and defeat Abiy’s attempt to extend his rein of terror by instigating horizontal conflict among our people, just as we did with the previous regime. We now have much more experience to beat their recycled tactics.
