ILLINOIS LEGISLATURE MOVES TO ABOLISH LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE SENTENCES FOR CHILDREN & YOUNG ADULTS
January 10, 2023 - Springfield, IL
The Illinois General Assembly has moved to abolish life without the possibility of parole sentences for children and young adults.
🚨NEW: Prisons across the U.S. are stripping away physical mail in what they claim to be an effort to combat drug smuggling.

As the U.S. continues to criminalize substance use disorder, jails & prisons are often thought of as de facto treatment facilities – but the reality couldn't be further from the truth
Communities must prioritize public health, not punishment
Mail scanning doesn’t solve the drug problem in prisons; it only hurts people. Most people in prison will someday return home to our communities. Making it harder for them to stay connected to their support systems does not make anyone safer.
The Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) began using mail scanning statewide in September 2025, even though mail scanning is not an evidence-based solution to the alleged problem of contraband.

Wendell continued, "Additionally, there is no evidence to support that the proposed permanent rules will be effective in stopping contraband from entering the IDOC.”

"People often read and re-read mail to remind them of their support system. To digitize physical mail is to eliminate the art, beauty and emotion, the texture and even a scent that is unique to physical correspondence," he said in his remarks.
