In the 1st video, you see the last pitch, a SL that is hung up in the zone. The catcher, the pitcher and I all acknowledged this in the moment, hoping for better execution in a 1-2 count.
But later, the catcher and I discussed, given the entirety of the at bat (seen in the 2nd video), how this pitch was a functional fit. Nested within the sequence of other sliders, locations, shakes, and the tempo/speed of the pitcher, this pitch worked.
An ecological framework helps us keep the performer-environment relationship as the appropriate scale of analysis, rather than just looking at a singular pitch, event or just the pitcher divorced from the context/interaction with the batter.
If we allow it, an EcoD lens can help us understand why "bad" pitches may actually be good and how we can leverage that for our players benefit.
Thank you to my support team of family friends, coaches, teammates, and the Waterloo community. I am excited to announce that I am a Triton and will be furthering my academic and athletic career at Iowa Central CC!#RTR🔱 @ICCCBaseball@eastloobaseball@IATravelBsbl @SuperSchell
