Day 38: Heisman, 2016

To call Lamar Jackson the most important athlete in Louisville history isn’t really that hot of a take. The Lamarouvlous things he did while playing for the Cards brought more eyes on the university than ever before.

Yesterday we left off after the 2016 FSU game. Sadly that year did not turn out the way most fans wanted it to. A loss at top 5 Clemson in arguably the best game that season; and then a string of losses to close out the season.

But something very special happened that season. Lamar Jackson won the Heisman Trophy.

Louisville has had players in the past flirt with the Heisman Trophy, namely Brian Brohm and Teddy Bridgewater. Lamar was in a different league than both of those guys.

Lamar earned 526 1st place votes. He didn’t just win the Heisman, he absolutely crushed the competition. It was never a question throughout the entire year who was going to win the award. Deshaun Watson was a distant second all season.

Lamar’s season stats were:

3543 Yards passing
30 TDs passing
1571 Yards rushing
21 TDs rushing

Just an absolutely insane season.

Lamar and Bobby were an absolute unit together. Bobby Petrino was able to adjust his scene into more of a spread power run system and it showed all of Lamar’s abilities every game.

I mentioned it earlier but the eyeballs that Lamar Jackson brought to the university were just unheard of for Louisville. Lamar Jackson was everywhere on social media and TV. UofL was getting record viewership for games, to this day 2016 is still the season with highest year viewership average. You were having people all around the country tune in just to watch Lamar do Lamar things.

Lamar Jackson would return in 2017 for his Junior season.

I would argue Lamar actually had a better season in 17. Statistics back that up, but as an entire team Louisville was not as good in 17. Lamar would take third in Heisman voting in 17 due into the monster season Baker Mayfield had and Louisville just not being super good.

After the 2017 season Lamar would declare for the NFL draft. The conversations leading up to that draft were asinine regarding Lamar Jackson. Everyday someone on ESPN would say he needs to play running back. The same ESPN hosts saying that guys like Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold, and Baker Mayfield were the real QBs of the draft.

Lamar Jackson would be taken by the Baltimore Ravens with final pick of the 1st round in the 2018 NFL draft.

So how did Lamar turn out? A modest 2 NFL MVPs, the most rushing yards ever by a QB, was the highest paid player in the league, and is regarded as the best dual-threat QB ever. Pretty good for a “running back”.

Lamar Jackson deserves everything this University can offer him. A statue needs to be done and sooner rather than later. We need to be honoring these guys while they’re in their prime and it’s still fresh. His number 8 is retired by Louisville.

I talked about it a little bit yesterday but being on campus during Lamar was an unreal experience. Every game was packed, every away game was massive watch parties, traveling to bowl games. It was just different.

Lamar Jackson is Louisville, and I’ll forever be grateful to him for that.

Day 37: College Gameday Finally, 2016

I’ll be honest. I’m biased that 2016 FSU game was the most fun game I’ve ever been to. People come about “coming out parties” a lot in College Football, this game felt like a major one for both the program and Lamar Jackson.

Some context first. Who is Lamar Jackson? Lamar Jackson was a 4 star QB out of Boynton Beach, Florida in the 15 class. He wasn’t a typical 4 star though. Getting serious interest from FSU, UGA, Auburn, UF, Miami, Ohio State, and Oregon. Ontop of that he went viral on Vine with an insane juke move.

As soon as Lamar got on campus there was some serious buzz. I remember hearing from someone in the facility back then “Bobby found his QB, but it’s going to look a lot different.”

The goal for Bobby was simple. Get Lamar Jackson on the field as much as possible. Lamar would see significant snaps in the 2015 playing in all games. His real coming out party was the Music City Bowl. One singular play will live in my mind forever, he stiffed armed Myles Garret to the ground.

I watched that game with my at the time girlfriend’s family who were rabidly kentucky fans. Her dad looked at me and simply said “That kid is different”

Going into 2016 there was a significant amount of hype. Locally people were calling this team Bobby’s best roster. Nationally Louisville was a preseason top 25 clocking in at 19.

What happened the first two weeks of the season would really get people talking.

Week 1: Charlotte, 70-14
Week 2: (Standalone) @ Syracuse, 62-28

Three things were happening. Louisville was just scoring at will. The “Lamar Leap” at Syracuse. Finally, Lamar Jackson had accounted for more yards as a player than 75 teams in college football.

The boy was a Heisman candidate.

Enter Week 3. Number 2 Florida State would be traveling to Number 10 Louisville. ESPN would announce pretty early that College Game Day would be coming to Louisville. This would be the shows first appearance in the 502.

I’ll be completely honest. I was extremely excited going into the game to get Gameday and was excited for the opportunity to play a top ten match up. But I didn’t think Louisville would win. Well I was really wrong.

Gameday would open up for people to get spots at 5AM. It was a rainy morning. My friends and I forbid going that early, instead we did our usual of getting our tailgating “supplies” ready. We would meet at a friend’s house in Old Louisville at 7AM to consume said “supplies” then head over to Old Cardinal Stadium for tailgate.

I will never forget those pregame festivities. It was the most insane thing I’ve witnessed while a student at Louisville. It wasn’t just us either, every single tailgate in the parking lot was ROCKING. Gameday was awesome also! (Wish I remembered being there a little more)

On College Gameday Lee Corso said a quote that will forever resonate with me.

“I’m making the toughest pick I’ve ever had to make, it’s between my school where I played and Coached, Florida State. And Louisville who gave me my first opportunity to be a head coach after 11 years as an assistant. It’s between my heart and my head! I’m going with my head! Give me that Cardinal!”

The following 60 minutes of football would be the most through ass kicking of a Top 5 team I’ve ever seen. Louisville wouldn’t just beat FSU, that would dominate them 63-20. It was the Lamar Jackson show. Lamar would throw for 216 and TD, he would also run for 146 yards and 4 TDs.

The boy was the Heisman frontrunner.

Louisville would jump up to 3rd in the country as well.
