On Wednesday, NAC Breda shared the tragic news that Mats Seuntjens and his partner had lost their newborn daughter. After the match last night, the club paid tribute, with fans of both teams lighting 18,000 sparklers.

Such sad news about Jimmy Rimmer, who has passed away aged 78. Aston Villa legend, champion of England, champion of Europe. His astonishing save in the first leg of the second-round tie with a very dangerous Dynamo Berlin in the 1981/82 season is the stuff of legend. Tony Morley would always tell Rimmer that it was “the save that won us the European Cup”.

It came in the 2-1 win in Berlin. When Artur Ullrich’s penalty hit the post, the rebound clipped Rimmer’s left foot and fell invitingly for the East Germany international. The goal was gaping but Rimmer managed to stretch out his left foot to divert Ullrich’s close-range follow-up over the bar. Rimmer also saved a late Hans-Jurgen Riediger strike. A 1-0 loss at Villa Park saw Villa through on away goals.

Rimmer kept out Dynamo Kiev in the ensuing quarters, and Anderlecht in the semis, especially in a tense second leg in Brussels. Rimmer lasted only 10 minutes of the epic final win over Bayern Munich in Rotterdam, aggravating a shoulder injury. But he’d more than played his part in Villa’s journey to European glory.

What a career Rimmer had. Began at Manchester United, understudied the great Alex Stepney, on the bench in the 68 European Cup final, 46 games. Good loan at Swansea City. Went to Arsenal, succeeded Bob Wilson, Player of the Year 74/75 when he enjoyed a string of good games, including against Manchester City, Everton and Liverpool in the first half of the season and many saves to end relegation fears. Much loved at Arsenal, making saves, wiping his gloves down the front of his shirt, 146 games.

Then Villa in 77, greatness, 287 games. Three years at Swansea, then goalkeeper coach and even a spell as their caretaker manager. “Jimmy was a much-loved figure, with a deep knowledge and love of the game,” Swansea said in their tribute. “He was one of the finest goalkeepers of his generation, but was a humble, quiet man who was deeply respected by all who knew him.” Rimmer also coached in China and Canada.

He was capped by England only once but that was the era of Ray Clemence, Peter Shilton and Joe Corringan. He played against Italy in the USA Bicentennial Cup at Yankee Stadium in 1976, replaced by Corrigan at half-time.

Such sad news about his passing. Holte Ender In The Sky and always a Villa legend. Thoughts with Jimmy’s family, friends and all his former team-mates. RIP.

I know Villa will protect him, but all this pressure/talk about Madjo being Harry Kane’s successor and a few (small number) saying he should start over Ollie for us, which Unai wouldn’t allow anyway he’ll be a super sub like Duran at first, is getting on my nerves.

He’s 17, everyone knows that, give the kid space to grow/progress naturally without added expectations. Ffs.
