For half a century, it’s been the holding of federal courts that it’s not “special” access when the WH generally opens its doors to journalists. Choose-your-news is a freedom the constitution grants to the American people, not to their government.

Today’s action revoking access for journalists from CNN, POLITICO, and MSNOW violates the First Amendment. The implications extend beyond these organizations: a standard used to exclude one news outlet because of its coverage could be applied to any outlet in the future. The American people, through a free and independent press, must be able to scrutinize those elected to power, regardless of whether government officials view it favorably.  That’s why courts have repeatedly held that once the White House provides access to journalists, it cannot deny that access arbitrarily or based on the content of their reporting. The WHCA calls on the administration to immediately restore our colleagues' access.

The president said it plainly in the Oval Office, describing his own planned action as a “ban on the free press.”

The Constitution protects the freedom of the press from government interference. That protection does not depend on whether the president likes a news organization’s coverage, agrees with its reporting, or approves of the questions its journalists ask.

This is about more than the rights of journalists. It is about the right of the American people to receive a full and independent account of the activities, policies and decisions of whoever occupies the nation’s highest office.

The WHCA stands in defense of our colleagues at CNN, MSNOW, and POLITICO who are being singled out for doing their jobs.

This action by the US government to subpoena reporters for reporting legitimate news on security concerns about Air Force 1 should alarm every American.

Sharing some personal/professional news: After 25 amazing years @Reuters, I’m making a move, joining Bloomberg as a Washington correspondent and senior member of the White House and politics team. I’ll be writing for @business and doing regular hits for @BloombergTV. I’m excited to join a great team when I start at the end of this month. It has been an absolute privilege to work for Reuters for so long and with such terrific colleagues and friends, in the U.S. and abroad, especially on our WH team. I’m beyond grateful. It’s very hard to leave. I’m not going far, though, and I remain committed to the values that both Reuters and Bloomberg uphold to produce fair, robust journalism.
