On Tuesday, I had a meeting with the COO of a $500M financial management firm. In 2021, they purchased a very expensive digital experience platform to provide better online service to customers. Somewhat out of fear due to the uncertainty of in person client interactions.

They proceeded to invest $600k in the initial launch with an offshore SI. They are now incurring $50k/mo in support fees to programmers, account managers, architects, etc. just to keep it running. There will never be positive ROI. This is a common story.

Now in 2025, you can hire the worlds best programmer for $20/month.

I'm revving back up the X after quite a few years. I'm old enough to remember when it was a bird thing.

The best things I learned in 2024 were unexpected.

At @eyemagine we changed our own GTM and delivery functions to be heavily GenAI enabled. This drove down our costs and made happier customers. This was expected.

Unexpectedly - I found out a few things along the way.

1. We started consulting with COO's. Our own transformational story developed into advisory services. It has been fun and exciting to see these transformations come along so easily.

2. I thought there would be friction and worry with outsourcing business functions to GenAI. It's been the complete opposite. It's been a lifeline to companies who have struggled to balance overhead expenses.

3. GenAI got better fast! Code writing and deliverable processing is at least 2x as good as when we started. I expected improvements but not the everyday improvements we are seeing now.

4. I learned there has never a better time to be a startup than right now. GTM and operating expenses that used to cost millions now cost hundreds. I spent most of the past decade working with large enterprises. Taking that expertise augmented with AI to startups has been very rewarding.
