I believe that our culture has a disordered relationship to watching sports but especially if you have played a sport there is an aesthetic appreciation for people who are exceptional. Part of holding up ideals to live for is paying attention to people who embody those ideals most perfectly. But that should typically result in doubling your own efforts to live up to those same ideals which is where our culture fails in many regards. I think the primary issue with watching sports is that people are already disconnected from the people around them. It isn't a shared experience that people can use to strengthen ties with each other in the same way it perhaps used to be and so it frequently becomes aesthetic appreciation with no outward component (a fundamentally masturbatory endeavor) or as you say a vicarious experience meant to salve one's own failings (a spiritual cucking)

I have about 10 people I would try to start businesses with. I'm reading Lee Kuan Yew's book about how they built Singapore. He has a whole section about reducing corruption by automatically increasing government salaries to keep pace with increases in the average salaries of normal Singaporeans. The whole book is chock full of practical and smart governance it's pretty insane

I think the issues surrounding institution building would be good to hear about from you. Have you ever thought about the strategy of building right wing institutions in the event of strong financial backing? What does effective institution building look like on a 2,5,10, and 20 year timeframe?

What is your point? IQ is strongly correlated with educational attainment and there is a large amount of literature showing that educational interventions have little effect on longterm IQ of students. I would be willing to wager that top tier schools at the time had much stronger population selection effects which account for the proportionally larger number of math geniuses coming from those schools. That still doesn't change the fact that von Neumann was a herculean intellect most likely because he possessed an unparalleled level of innate ability

I would agree that we require a basic substrate of experience to perform relevance realization. I think that ties into the subject of "madness" because we can't really know whether something is relevant outside of a certain range of experience. That is why paradigm shifts are so difficult because they draw upon patterns or instantiations of patterns that fall outside of our relevance lightcones. I'm reminded of the allegory of the cave. Somehow it seems like we can jump beyond our usual relevance realization circuitry in certain circumstances.

On another note, I don't understand how the experiential substrate gets boot strapped because it seems like relevance realization is also forming the experiential substrate that allows relevance realization to exist. Seems like there are clues in developmental psychology but I don't know enough about the literature to make any firm declarations. One theory I could put forth is that our relevance realization is jump started by our parents or whoever cares for us as small children
