@middle_class_us In 1980, families spent an average of 13.5% of their disposable income on food. Currently, the number is 9.7%
Gen Z spends less of their income on food than boomers did.
@AlanBradfo87299@middle_class_us While this is true. The market for housing in high population areas is distorted. Normal market signals can't function when there are external forces limiting supply, like public opposition to building more housing. As usual, a regulation problem.
@UziCryptoo $19 would have been an extremely well paid job for a union job, considering the median pay for union jobs in 1982 was ~$9.50
($19 x 2000 hours) - $38k would have been well into upper-middle-class territory.
The median was only making $19k, equivalent to $65k today
@omgsidewalks You dont want to understand it. Its because the value held by them is utilized in the growth of economic activity, which raises standard of living great than increased tax revenue does.
@TalbertsirhC@goran_kenk@omgsidewalks In many ways that's true. But we shouldn't discount that modern capitalism requires a certain moral framework in order to function. Most of human history didn't recognize some of the human rights capitalism relies on.
@Laymens_terms@bankertobuilder All 100% correct. The other factor for their inefficiency is the US is that because they are more rare, drivers are less practiced at navigating them. It only takes one moron who's never driven through one before to collapse all movement.
