Europe in a nutshell: moral suicide

In October 2024, the Free Speech Union came to the aid of Rick Prior, the elected Chair of the Metropolitan Police Federation, after he was suspended for saying that rank-and-file officers had become so fearful of complaints of racism — and potentially losing their jobs — that they no longer dared challenge allegations of racism, particularly when made by people of colour.
According to Prior, some officers were reluctant to intervene when they suspected a crime was being committed if the perpetrator was a black or brown person for fear of being accused of racism.
Fortunately, with our support, Rick Prior won his
Given the circumstance of Henry Nowak's death, it's clear that Rick Prior was right to raise these concerns.
The police have overcorrected in response to the perception that the force is institutionally racist, and that needs to be addressed.
People like Rick Prior — and other elected federation chairs — must be free to speak out about what they believe has gone wrong and propose common-sense solutions without risking suspension or dismissal.
The lack of free speech within policing on these issues has contributed to the current state of affairs in which officers appear to be more concerned about not following up accusations of racism than protecting people from violent criminals.

A Furore That Was Whipped Up. That Is What Alexis Boon Called It.
Henry Nowak died in handcuffs on a Southampton street. The Prime Minister said he felt sick watching the body cam footage. The Commons Speaker ordered the government to make a statement. The chief constable of the force responsible described the national outcry as a furore that had been whipped up.
Alexis Boon, chief constable of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, spoke publicly for the first time today. He apologised for his officers handcuffing and arresting Henry. He said Henry could not be saved. He said his force had been subjected to unfair criticism. He said he does not accept the term two tier policing and does not recognise it. He will not resign.
The University of Reading evaluated Hampshire's mandatory Inclusion Matters diversity course, completed by 6,250 officers and staff. The findings were published by the force itself. Nearly twenty percent of officers said they felt they would have been rejected for saying the wrong thing during the training. Nearly fifteen percent said that if they made a mistake it would have been held against them. Fifteen and a half percent felt controlled and pressured to be certain ways. The University noted that individuals who did not respond well to the course may benefit from further intervention, monitoring or coaching.
Read that final observation carefully. Officers who retained their own judgment during diversity training were to be monitored, further intervened upon and coached until they responded correctly. The training was not designed to inform. It was designed to condition. Hampshire's own commissioned research documents that conditioning precisely.
The Metropolitan Police has gone further. It commissioned HR consultant Shereen Daniels to write a structural review of systemic racism within the force titled 30 Patterns of Harm. The Metropolitan Police described it as a key document in its race action plan. In a section on neutrality Daniels writes that neutrality is not neutral. That it reflects dominant norms, particularly whiteness. That claiming neutrality is claiming distance from bias but that distance is not real. That neutrality is a myth. The Metropolitan Police told its officers they could not be neutral because of their whiteness.
Officers trained that neutrality is a myth, that their own whiteness prevents impartiality and that failing to respond well to diversity training would result in monitoring and coaching arrived at the scene where Henry Nowak lay dying. They were not neutral. They had been trained not to be.
Chris Philp, the shadow home secretary, said policing had been infected by an extremist ideology that calls itself anti-racism but is in fact racist itself because it urges ethnic minorities to be treated more leniently. He said the doctrine is enshrined as official police policy and in his view contributed to officers prioritising the allegation of racism above saving a young man's life.
That is the argument Alexis Boon refuses to engage with. He apologised for the handcuffs. He described the outcry as a furore. He said he would not resign. He did not address the Inclusion Matters course whose own evaluation shows officers were afraid to say the wrong thing. He did not address the neutrality document that told his officers their whiteness prevents impartiality. He did not address the training that the University of Reading documented and that his force commissioned.
Henry Nowak is not a furore. He is an eighteen year old boy who died in handcuffs on a Southampton street while his killer chose his food in a police kitchen. The furore is the appropriate response to that. The chief constable who cannot see the difference has not understood the question.
"Alexis Boon said his force had been subjected to unfair criticism. He said he does not accept the term two tier policing and does not recognise it. He will not resign."

Brilliant analysis as always Jim. Boils my blood that our country is being destroyed by politicians seeking power. Ed Davey has shown us what he is capable of with his involvement in the Post Office affair.
The Party That Profited From The Crisis It Refuses To Solve.
There is a multi billion pound industry built on the continuation of mass illegal immigration into Britain. It requires the boats to keep coming. It requires the asylum claims to keep flowing. It requires the hotels to stay full. It requires the legal challenges to keep blocking removals. Remove the crisis and the industry collapses. Which is why the industry has every incentive to ensure the crisis never ends and every incentive to fund the political parties that guarantee it will not.
The Liberal Democrats are that party.
Ed Davey campaigns for open borders, opposes every serious enforcement measure and demands Britain rejoin the EU customs union that would deepen its exposure to the same migration crisis now tearing the continent apart. His party has opposed the Rwanda scheme, opposed detention, opposed accelerated removals and opposed every legislative attempt to create a credible deterrent. The policy position is consistent. So is the funding.
Safwan Adam was the Liberal Democrats' biggest election donor. He gave the party nearly £500,000 before the July 2024 election and over £750,000 across that year, confirmed by Electoral Commission records. Adam was a director of Stay Belvedere Hotels Limited, a company appointed in April 2021 with no prior track record in immigration accommodation. Within months it was running 51 hotels housing asylum seekers across England and Wales, providing approximately a quarter of all Home Office asylum places under a contract worth billions of pounds of taxpayer money.
In the year to September 2022 SBHL reported nearly £705 million in income, almost entirely from government contracts. The company paid out £45 million in dividends. Adam and his co-director each received at least £7.8 million. Between 2020 and 2022 the company reported pre-tax profits of £75.7 million on a turnover of £888 million. The contract was subsequently stripped after the Home Office found significant elements of the company's behaviour fell short of what we would expect from a government supplier. Staff were reportedly paid as little as £5.60 an hour, below the legal minimum wage.
The mechanism is not complicated. More crossings mean more asylum claims. More asylum claims mean more accommodation contracts. More accommodation contracts mean more dividends. More dividends mean more political donations. More political donations fund the party that opposes every measure that would reduce the crossings. The Liberal Democrats do not want to solve the small boats crisis. Their donor base depends on it continuing.
This is not an isolated arrangement. It is the visible tip of an industrial complex that includes NGOs paid to process claims, human rights lawyers paid to challenge removals, accommodation providers paid to house arrivals and people trafficking networks paid to deliver them. Each component of that system profits from the continuation of the crisis. Each has a financial interest in open borders. Each opposes enforcement. And each, in one form or another, funds or lobbies the political parties that deliver the policy environment they require.
The British public is told the small boats crisis is a humanitarian emergency requiring compassionate solutions. What it actually is, is a supply chain. People are the product. Taxpayer money is the revenue. Political donations are the return on investment. And the Liberal Democrats, the party of compassion and human rights, were a shareholder.
Ed Davey wants to talk about foreign money in politics. He is right to raise it. The money that flowed from the asylum accommodation industry into his party's election fund is a reasonable place to start.
