On this date in 1950, Earl Lloyd stepped onto the court and into history as the first Black player to play in an NBA game, becoming a Pioneer in the @NBA. Fellow NBA Pioneers, Chuck Cooper made his debut for the Boston Celtics on Nov. 1, and Nat "Sweetwater" Clifton made his debut on Nov. 4 for the New York Knicks. The Pioneers' resilience, vision, and leadership fundamentally reshaped the game, laying the foundation for a more dynamic league and inspiring generations to dream bigger and push further. It makes me proud to see current stars Stephen Curry, Jaylen Brown, and Karl-Anthony Towns reflect on the 75th anniversary of these barrier-breaking debut games.
For those in power, accountability is paramount.

My new graphic novel, CHAMPION, is out now! CHAMPION is a graphic novel for young adults that delves into my life as a social justice advocate through the story of fictional high school student Monk Travers, whose promising basketball career is in jeopardy and he is assigned to write a report on me. But not about my basketball career—about my life as an advocate for change. As Monk grudgingly begins his research, he discovers a history of struggles, conflicts, frustrations, and violence that he’d never been aware of, awakening a passion for social justice that rivals my own. CHAMPION highlights and celebrates my work for good like never before, inspiring fans of all ages. Follow the link to buy your copy today!
