He looked behind him and saw a man bending down to pick up an umbrella. Markov immediately felt dizzy and fainted right at the bus stop. He was taken to the hospital with high fever and died three days later.

An autopsy revealed a very small sphere made of a platinum-iridium alloy stuck to Markov's thigh. The ball covered with many small needles was smeared with a little ricin and this substance was the cause of death.

Ricin is extracted from the seeds of the castor bean plant (Ricinus communis). This substance is a type of glycoprotein that interferes with protein synthesis and thereby causes cell death. Just 1mg per kilogram of human body is enough to kill the victim.
