It’s with great sadness that my Auntie Cathy (Rutherford) has very suddenly passed away this week. Born in Glasgow my Auntie Cathy was a trade unionist to the core and remained politically active her whole life. This famous clip shows you exactly where she stood.
The UK be like "trans people aren't real, they just have mental health issues, also mental health issues aren't real, get a job, also there are no jobs"
I have officially decided that Ryan Gosling gently punching the guitarist on the chin, kissing the cameraperson's hand, and flirting unabashedly with a bunch of very hunky dancers is the apex of non-toxic masculinity and I love it.
Does class/occupational maturity occur? Do people become stabilised in their class position at ~ age 35, as most studies assume?
According to our new study (w/ Bihagen & Kjellsson) not for most Swedes

If fox hunting was done by teenagers from council estates on bikes and had dogs to chase the foxes, it would be banned.
However fox hunting is done by rich people in posh suits on horses so the Tories won’t ban it.
@pete_the_teapot You’re absolutely correct in your assessment of the situation (if a bit harsh in response). That someone thinks that the statement "lactate is also an important energy source for neurons" requires a citation in this context and, specifically to their work, is lunacy!
Thames Water wants to increase customer bills by 40% before inflation by 2030.
Thames has handed billions in dividends to shareholders, picked customer pockets.
Now want 40% price rise in real terms.
NOT acceptable.
Let Thames go bust. Nationalise it.

ive received a few kind offers from editors to write for them but when i submit an article that says something like "to understand how to wear pants, we must go back to Bourdieu," they reply with "wtf"
Peer review also costs time (and money). At KU Leuven (my university), we estimated that applying and reviewing for internal funds costs between 8 and 16 million euros for a total budget of less than 50 million. (6/16)

A lot of research funding is allocated through competitive peer review of project proposals. It is claimed that this system is efficient, and selects the best and the most innovative science. In fact, it is highly inefficient, and it hampers innovation. (2/16)
@maythehan But they won’t tell you that, and instead use these weird ‘objective’ metrics to say that something is wrong with you, undermining your skills and abilities that could not have conceivably been measured or assessed in the brief interview test/encounter.
@maythehan This really sucks! My experience interviewing for non-uni soc res posts is that they operate in their own ‘research’ discourse, and if you can’t prove that you get it, or can be easily converted, it’s a problem of ‘fit’ rather than skill or experience ☹️
