I am neither shocked nor surprised by Mehbooba Mufti's latest video statement in which she draws a parallel between the Gen Z protesters at Jantar Mantar and those who used to protest in Kashmir, and goes on to describe Kashmir's protesters as militants.

This is, after all, the same leader who justified the killing of Kashmiri children by asking, "Kya woh doodh aur toffee lane gaye the?" ("Had those children come out of their homes to fetch milk and toffee?")

People of Jammu and Kashmir have not forgotten what happened during her tenure. It was under her government that pellet guns were used against protesting children. Hundreds of young boys and girls lost their eyesight or suffered permanent injuries because of those pellets. These are painful memories that no amount of political rhetoric can erase.

That is why her attempt to brand Kashmir's protesters as militants comes as no surprise. But what is truly disturbing is the extent to which someone who claims to represent the people can sink for political convenience.

She first went to Jantar Mantar to appease Congress leaders. Now, by branding Kashmir's protesters as militants, she seems equally eager to appease her masters in the BJP. That's what opportunistic politics looks like.

But the people of Jammu and Kashmir are not blind to history. They know who brought the BJP into power in the erstwhile state. They know who defended the killing of young children. They know under whose government pellet guns were fired at the youth of the Valley. These facts cannot be erased by speeches or selective narratives.

The people are wise. They cannot be misled forever.

It is now for the leaders of the PDP to decide where they stand. If they have any conscience, they should clearly state whether they support or reject their leader's remarks describing Kashmir's protesters as militants. At the very least, they owe that much to their own dignity, credibility, and the people they claim to represent.

It is totally shameful that a tourist named shahrukhjordi_ has made disrespectful and unacceptable remarks about our Kashmiri sisters and women. Such comments can never be accepted.

We warmly welcome tourists as our guests, and Kashmir has always been known for its hospitality. However, anyone who comes here must respect our culture, our values, and our women.

Making offensive statements and spreading stereotypes about Kashmiri women is deeply hurtful and unacceptable. If someone comes to Kashmir with such a mindset, they should stay at home rather than come to Kashmir. We do not need tourists who make such statements about our sisters.

We have great respect for the many tourists who visit Kashmir with love and respect, and they are always welcome. But those who come with disrespectful intentions or make degrading remarks about our sisters and mothers are not welcome. The honour and dignity of our women are far more important than tourism, and such behaviour will never be tolerated.
