I am the person who wrote the template.

Not a layoff announcement. The template for the layoff announcement. The .docx file with brackets where the company name goes and a tracked-changes history going back to 2019. I work at a communications consulting firm in Manhattan. We have eleven clients in the Fortune 500. Our product is language.

The template has seven paragraphs. I will walk you through them because you have read every one and did not know they were mine.

Paragraph one: "After careful consideration and a thorough review of our strategic priorities." Careful consideration means the board met for forty minutes. Thorough review means the CFO presented one slide. Strategic priorities means AI is in the earnings script this quarter.

Paragraph two: "We are restructuring [COMPANY] to position ourselves for the AI-driven future." This is the only paragraph I have updated since 2023. It used to say "the post-pandemic landscape." Before that, "the evolving digital economy." Before that, "changing market conditions." The brackets change. The verb never does.

Paragraph three: "This was not an easy decision." It was an extremely easy decision. The template was finished before the list was. In six years of selling this document, no client has ever changed paragraph three. Not one word. Not one comma. They change the number of people. They change the severance weeks. They do not touch "this was not an easy decision" because the sentence does not describe difficulty. The sentence describes liability protection. An easy decision can be challenged. A difficult decision has already been grieved.

The difficult decision has been made.

Paragraph four: severance terms. I provide three tiers: Standard (2 weeks per year), Enhanced (3 weeks per year, for when there is press coverage), and Protective (4 weeks per year, for when there is a Congressional hearing). Most clients choose Standard. Two have chosen Protective. I billed both of them an additional $40,000 for the Protective package. The package is the same document with a higher number in one cell of one table.

Paragraph five: "We remain deeply committed to our mission." I have never asked a client what their mission is. The sentence works regardless. That is why it is in the template.

Paragraph six: "We are grateful for the contributions of our departing colleagues." Departing. Not fired. Not laid off. Departing. As though they packed a suitcase.

Paragraph seven: signature. First name only. First name says "I am speaking to you as a person." The CEO did not write this letter. The CEO did not read this letter. The CEO signed a routing slip that authorized this letter. I wrote the routing slip too. That is a separate engagement.

The difficult decision has been made.

Fourteen companies used that template this quarter. I know because I invoiced them. $185,000 per engagement. The engagement is: I send the .docx. I am available for one phone call. On the call, the Chief People Officer asks me how to handle the all-hands. I say: read the template. They read the template. The employees listen to their Chief People Officer read my template and believe they are hearing their Chief People Officer.

Last month, two clients in the same industry announced layoffs on the same Tuesday. I checked. Same paragraph one. Same paragraph two. Same paragraph three. Same "departing colleagues." If you had put the two announcements side by side, the only differences were the logo, the number, and the CEO's first name. One reporter noticed. She tweeted about it. It got 2,400 likes. Neither company called me.

My template has eliminated more positions this year than any individual CEO. Nobody knows my name. Nobody will. The template does not have an author. That is also in the template. Paragraph seven: first name only.

The difficult decision has been made. I make it easy.
