THE END OF SHOWMAX | A R4.9 BILLION LESSON IN AFRICA’S STREAMING ECONOMICS
MultiChoice Group has confirmed it will discontinue Showmax, bringing to a close one of Africa’s most ambitious and costly streaming experiments.
Launched in 2015 and aggressively relaunched in 2024, Showmax was intended to become the continent’s strategic response to global streaming giants. Instead, it exposed the hard economics of Africa’s digital infrastructure.
The numbers tell the story:
• R2.6 billion — Showmax trading loss for the year ended March 2024
• R4.9 billion — Showmax trading loss for the year ended March 2025
• 49% decline — Reduction in MultiChoice Group’s trading profit
Subscriber growth and revenue targets missed their mark by such a margin that the numbers eventually began speaking for themselves. At that point, even leadership stopped softening the reality.
The first public signal came from the new controlling shareholder.
In January, during an investor call following Canal+’s acquisition of control of MultiChoice, Groupe Canal+ CEO Maxime Saada acknowledged what the financial trajectory had already begun to reveal. Showmax, he told analysts, had “been losing a lot of money over the last few years.”
He then delivered the line that removed any remaining ambiguity:
“Showmax is not a commercial success. It’s quite obvious.”
At the time, the remark sounded like a shareholder’s sober diagnosis of a struggling asset.
Two weeks ago, the operating leadership said the same thing more plainly.
In comments to TechCentral, MultiChoice Group CEO David Mignot confirmed that Showmax cannot continue in its current form. His assessment was blunt:
“Financially speaking, business-wise speaking, the thing is not flying.”
When the controlling shareholder and the operating CEO arrive at the same conclusion in public within weeks of each other, the signal to the market becomes unmistakable.
The experiment had reached its limit.
Showmax was built on a premise that Africa would follow the same streaming adoption curve seen in North America and Europe. That assumption collided with the structural realities of the continent’s infrastructure.
Smartphone penetration has expanded rapidly across Africa, but the foundations required for mass streaming adoption remain uneven. Broadband access is still limited in many markets. Mobile data costs remain among the highest globally relative to income. Electricity reliability continues to influence how and when households consume digital media.
The result is a persistent tension between global streaming economics and African consumer realities.
MultiChoice attempted to narrow that gap through scale and strategic partnerships. In 2023 the company partnered with NBCUniversal and Sky, with NBCUniversal acquiring a 30% stake in Showmax and introducing Peacock streaming technology alongside an expanded international content pipeline, including live English Premier League football.
When Showmax 2.0 launched across 44 African markets in February 2024, it represented one of the largest media investments the continent had seen.
But the outcome illustrates a familiar strategic principle: capital and technology cannot compensate for misaligned market fundamentals. Where infrastructure constraints shape consumer behaviour, business models designed for more developed digital ecosystems often struggle to achieve scale.
While MultiChoice has framed the decision to discontinue Showmax as part of a broader shift toward financial discipline and investment optimisation as the group integrates more closely with Canal+, the underlying dynamics run deeper.
The platform’s trajectory ultimately exposed a structural tension that has long existed in Africa’s digital economy: the gap between globally imported technology models and the continent’s infrastructure realities.
Streaming platforms were designed for markets where high-speed broadband is ubiquitous, data costs are marginal relative to income, and electricity reliability is largely taken for granted. Much of Africa operates under very different conditions.
In such environments, scale alone cannot resolve the economic mismatch.
What Showmax encountered was not simply competitive pressure from global platforms. It encountered the structural limits of a model built for a different digital ecosystem.
The company has indicated that the transition will not result in retrenchments, with employees expected to move into other areas of the organisation.
What the next phase of the group’s streaming strategy will look like has not yet been fully outlined. MultiChoice has indicated that it intends to develop a new in-house streaming platform while Canal+ continues to expand its investment in premium content and strategic partnerships across the continent.
For now, however, Showmax brings to a close a decade-long attempt to build a scaled African alternative to global streaming platforms.
Africa’s digital media future will arrive. But it will emerge on economic terms shaped by the continent itself, not by models imported from markets built on vastly different infrastructure foundations.
