Fund Resilience, Not Disasters

At the ongoing #IDDRR2025 Symposium in Busia County, NDMA Deputy Director, Drought Management Coordination, Ms. Mary Wangui, delivered a compelling scene-setting presentation on “The Rising Cost of Disasters on Kenya’s Economy – The Case of Drought.”

The presentation highlighted the enormous losses Kenya faces from climate-related disasters such as droughts and floods. These shocks deepen food insecurity, particularly across the arid and semi-arid regions, slow GDP growth, and strain the national budget.

The cost of climate shocks can be reduced through:
• Risk-informed budgeting at national and county levels
• Scaling anticipatory financing and social protection
mechanisms
• Strengthening public-private partnerships
• Investing in nature-based solutions such as
watershed management and reforestation
• Enhancing community ownership of resilience
initiatives
Resilience is a shared responsibility, thus there is need to strengthen collaboration with non-state actors, including NGOs & Civil Society Organisations, the private sector, academia & research, and local communities.

Together with partners ;Tinada, Caritas, St. Camillus, Testimony CBO & Grassroots Women Development , we highlighted community-driven action that’s funding resilience, not disasters.

Day 1 | Kitui Field Visit
In Kathume, we met Nico , a young farmer turning dry land into a thriving eco-farm. With bananas, skuma, melons, water harvesting & irrigation, he proves resilience and innovation can turn challenges into sustainability

At Nzawa Primary, parents, teachers & learners are growing a food forest using permaculture—sack gardens, banana circles & water harvesting. Their harvest now feeds 400+ pupils twice a week, proving schools can grow not just food, but resilience & hope.
