Despite his wielding no power, huge media outlets relentlessly targeted him. The NY Post badgered his parents to denounce and expel him from their home, and even once they did it, the paper published a photo of their house (doxxing) and photos of the parents.

Mace's statement about "every single Muslim" is about a zillion times more bigoted and disgusting, and it was made publicly, and she wields actual power, but the reaction and indignation will be a tiny fraction of what it was for that college student's private utterance.

Just in case you're wondering who actually benefits from double standards and who has the power to punish and destroy even obscure people who make statements in private that offend a particular group.
