The Kenya Women Senators Association, led by Chairperson Senator Veronica Maina, has called for urgent, coordinated national action to end the rising cases of violence, abuse and neglect against children across the country.
KEWOSA calls for immediate measures: strict enforcement of child protection and sexual offences laws, keeping every child in school—including adolescent mothers, expanding adolescent-friendly health services, and mobilizing parents, teachers, and community leaders.
KEWOSA has sounded the alarm on Bungoma’s Triple Threat—HIV infections, adolescent pregnancies, and sexual and gender-based violence are rising among youth, demanding urgent action to safeguard their health, safety, and future.
In 2024 alone, Bungoma recorded 192 new HIV infections among adolescents. Between 2016 and 2024, over 122,000 adolescent pregnancies were documented, and 805 cases of SGBV affected adolescents, accounting for 41% of all reported cases.
The Members of the Kenya Women Senators Association (KEWOSA), led by the Chairperson Sen. @VeronicaMainaW, engaged with students of different schools spread across Busia County today on the tough but necessary topics of HIV/AIDS, teen pregnancy, and Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
The core of the discussion centered on providing students with critical information and guidance on navigating complex social challenges, specifically focusing on HIV/AIDS prevention, mitigating the risks of teen pregnancies, and addressing the root causes and effects of Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
In a move to support student welfare and retention, the delegation also distributed practical items: sanitary pads for all the girls and boxers for the boys. These gifts underscore the Senators' commitment to ensuring that lack of basic necessities does not hinder a child's right to an education.
