I really miss this kind of America.
Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford ran against each other in 1976.
When Ford passed away, Carter gave the eulogy at his funeral.
When Carter passed away, Ford’s son Steve spoke at Carter’s funeral.
Barack Obama and John McCain ran against each other in 2008.
When McCain passed away, Obama gave the eulogy at his funeral.
They disagreed. They debated. They fought hard for what they believed in.
But at the end of the day, they still saw each other as human beings. As Americans.
That is the part we have lost.
Somewhere along the way, disagreement turned into hatred. Politics turned into teams. And people forgot that respect does not mean you agree with someone on everything.
I still believe we can get back to this.
Not because it will be easy. Not because everyone will suddenly think the same.
But because America is supposed to be better than this.
Bipartisan respect used to be possible.
And someday, I pray we remember how to do it again. 🇺🇸💙
I've attended the National Prayer Breakfast for much of the past two decades. I staffed the President and worked on his speech there for four years. I wrote extensively about the breakfast in my first book. One purpose of the Breakfast in history has been to position presidents and political leaders in such a way that they are humbled--their remarks typically focused on ways they fell short, the nation's reliance on grace that politics and politicians can't provide, etc.
Not until this president has someone gone to the breakfast to make so much of himself, and so little of God. And he does it every year. These aren't policy disagreements. These aren't differences resulting from Church-State separation. This is Donald Trump going to a convening that has a central focus on the power of relationship with Jesus as the transformative force in the world, and he uses that opportunity to make light of prayer and suggest he'll go to heaven because he's earned his way in. He goes to a convening built on the premise that Jesus transcends all divides in society, including partisan ones, and says an entire group of people *who are specifically recruited and asked to be in the room and on the program* actually do not belong there. Like he did at a memorial service for one of his most prominent supporters, in previous years he's gone to the breakfast to directly contradict Jesus' teachings on loving your enemies.
During the Clinton years, the Clintons sat on the dais while Mother Teresa lovingly confronted him on the issue of abortion. Now, people sit at their own breakfast while this president mocks their deepest beliefs to their face. And he tells them they love it. He tells them they're lucky to have him.
If you ever questioned how people sided with the Nazis, but today you’re twisting yourself into pretzels to justify the murderous actions of ICE, congratulations… you’ve answered your own question.
@joyreaper@EdKrassen You understand that not having documentation is a civil infraction - akin to a speeding ticket. Ever have one of those? It’s the same level of infraction. How bout they lock you up too? No? Then back off.
@Franklin_Graham The lying, cheating, and stealing is coming from DJT. He knows no other behavior. Killing is wrong and chanting about it is wrong too. No excuses from either side. ICE agents murdering people made in the image of God is the actual problem here.
@OleTimeHardball I have an oddball answer - Tom Brunansky. He hit 3 home runs in a game the day I met my husband. It’s how we figured out the date later, and now we celebrate it every year.
@KingGuy04@skefhaus I learned this when I lived in Boston and my wallet got stolen out of my tote bag in a crowed store. They took the cash and postage stamps and dropped the wallet in a mailbox. Got my photos and library card, etc back and I was thrilled.
@Sadie_NC The house we lived in when I was little had a milk box in the kitchen. It was about 2’x2’ square, one door opened in the kitchen, one door opened on the back of the house. My parents once sent me through it when we got locked out of the house to unlock the door.
@Scott13820337@MalloryMcMorrow We need common sense gun laws! And as soon as we start having mass saberings, we’ll need common sense sword laws. It most certainly IS the weapon, why can’t you admit it?!
@fred_guttenberg@JenniferEValent Not the first group of kids to have a second round - look at the Michigan State shooting following a nearby high school shooting. It’s insane that we don’t have stronger gun laws. Absolutely insane.
@NedRyerson98@dionysiaatrebas@BridgetCambria8@oprman Because Democratic US Presidents are the only leaders to abuse power? That’s a stretch. I have travelled across the US and have yet to find a concentration camp.
