Continuation from previous post. Following the 1986 Challenger disaster, NASA completely revamped the crew's bailout options. The ejection seats were scrapped in favor of the slidewire and pole bailout system. If the shuttle was forced to make a controlled glide without a runway, astronauts would extend a 2.5-meter carbon-fiber pole from the side hatch. By attaching a lanyard to the pole, they would slide away from the orbiter to clear the left wing before pulling their parachutes.👀
