CIJ commends the government and @bheuu_jpm's affirmation in tabling the FOI bill, with no further delays, in the upcoming parliament sitting.

However, we reiterate: In order for the FOI law to be truly effective - and not a toothless legislation - it must be mandated with an independent oversight body with public interest at its center.

The FOI bill, which is aimed at promoting transparency and accountability, will also be undermined if it is not substantially coupled with creating an enabling legal environment and the repeal of repressive laws such as the Official Secrets Act and Section 203A of the Penal Code.

We urge the government to move ahead with genuine reform in mind - not treating this legislation as another feather in their cap. We need a cultural mindset shift for the FOI law to be functional.

KLRA+SD welcomes the Private Member’s Bill by seven KL MPs to amend the Federal Capital Act 1960 and introduce a council system within DBKL — a positive step toward shared decision-making, stronger oversight and greater accountability in Kuala Lumpur. #GoodGovernance

We note Private Members’ Bills rarely reach debate, but RUU355 shows they can prompt government adoption. KLRA+SD urges the Bill to specify clear appointment criteria for councillors — e.g. recognised bachelor’s degree, relevant experience, proven integrity, no COI.

@MaimunahSharif KL residents deserve to know why she’s being reassigned. This exposes the weakness of having an appointed mayor — one answerable upward, not to the people. In contrast, cities like New York elect their mayors, ensuring accountability and continuity in leadership.

Dato’ Seri TPr (Dr.) @MaimunahSharif Maimunah Mohd Sharif’s reassignment is a loss to Kuala Lumpur and its residents. Her leadership brought a fresh, people-focused approach to city management that stood out from her predecessors.

Redevelopment is already happening in KL before implementation of URA. However, it's not rigorously monitored & regulated. Without proper communication, education & awareness initiatives fr the government,
