The position is fully remote, and offers competitive pay and benefits. Send questions and applications to [email protected].
On Thursday, the US Department of Justice filed a major antitrust complaint against Apple, accusing the company of illegally maintaining a monopoly over smartphones, particularly "performance smartphones." The DOJ alleges Apple doesn't compete on the merits, but uses anticompetitive tactics to lock users into its iOS ecosystem and make it harder to switch to Android devices. Apple allegedly restricted distribution of "Super Apps" (like WhatsApp) and "Cloud-Streaming Apps" that could make switching between iOS and Android more seamless. The DOJ also claims Apple degraded messaging between iOS and Android to discourage people from switching away from iOS if the rest of their contacts are iOS users. Apple also used smartwatches as a "locking" strategy, only allowing full Apple Watch full functionality with iPhones, then denying third-party, cross-platform watches access to key iPhone APIs. Finally, Apple restricted competing, cross-platform digital wallets on iOS to build dependence on Apple Wallet. According to the DOJ, these practices sacrifice product quality to deter users from leaving iOS. Apple is fine making iPhones worse as long as it undermines cross-platform technologies.
