@JayWamsted Right? And college profs do the same thing to HS teachers.
I was shocked when I moved from the university into high school.
We have to communicate, work together and support one another- across all levels.
@DrBlackDeer “Have you heard of the great 1970s famines that killed off most of the world?” “No,” of course, is their response and this turns into a long conversation about solutions- both the good and bad, in their opinions.
@DrBlackDeer For me, this led to a multi-day lesson plan on Cold War anxieties for my HSers. We talk about nuclear anxieties (fun music & music videos), radiation from testing, and the Population Bomb. I don’t downplay those scary decades… but somehow youth survived & became their parents.
@thisishannahkim@JVanCamp5 My guess is that they didn’t want more instruction but more experiences to continue to “build a case” and “prove” superior in their head.
@thisishannahkim I read up on democratizing the classroom & gave the first name a shot…
Only to find this is what I’d get. It was the most disrespectful group I’ve taught in a college course.
After a student course blocked me in a corner during OH, I vowed never again. Bring someone to the mtg.
@csschmitt1 From there, we analyze primary sources as a class and talk about the insights from each one, as well as how they fit together to tell a story- and what might complicate the narrative. I love to assign William Cronin’s article on the Dust Bowl narratives to discuss further.
@csschmitt1 After having a small discussion, I go through a Kahoot, but isn’t set to indicate right or wrong answers- I set it up as a poll. Then, I have them essentially debate each one.
In my area, most students covered this in high school, and I am cleaning up misunderstandings.
@evijit This is crazy. When I was finishing my doctorate, I will never forgot presenting a paper and a professor, knowing I built upon their work, asked me out of concern why I didn’t contact him. He was Emiratis, the work was published 45 years prior, and he still wanted to help.
@3_momma3@ppiewme@ABC The 9 year old hasn’t been able to leave the house or attend school for 6 years. That places her at 3 years old since she’s left the house.
@DrSleeps@JonathanBurdick I love that you have a full yr. That goes back to the institutional support, & it allows more time for meaningful dives into content.
I get jealous some times that people have AP Gov for a full year, while World (800+ yrs of history) feels like a race.😅 Still love teaching it.
