@PhillyJoeD When you know you're insulated from the consequences, why proceed with caution? Shades of Theranos, where all those investors were "fooled" by lies of mutual convenience.
@SwantonTP@greggnunziata USS NJ is a national treasure. Most service seen by any battleship on Earth, and if they needed, they could shake off the dust and send her around the globe yet again.
@harrisonfinberg I kind of put storage rental into a similar category of "useful but mostly predatory," like check cashing windows or having a high density of liquor stores. This puts almost no money or value into the community, but takes quite a lot of it out.
@NPlafcanx2@theanacHRist_TA@lthomasnews Great point. Coaching, travel, medical all comes out of that number, though, right? Hard to pull that off without substantial outside income.
@DavidAFrench In Philadelphia, we have hundreds of LEOs "out sick" while moonlighting or simply enjoying weeks/months off. Meanwhile, FOP covers for them. Seen similar stories from other cities, wondering if SF has something similar happening.

@TylerDLloyd@QuinHillyer@RichLowry What reason do they have to stop using the tools that allows them to ignore any political accountability?
I look at it this way: their actions indicate they view ideology as a means to power and wealth. That ideology was only conservativism so long as it served that purpose.
@rico_rants @janecoaston Just giving up on humanity, scratching that hate itch on the internet all day long. You don't think like that without a lot of unoccupied time on your hands. Equal parts sad and terrifying.
It's like 60s drop out culture meets genocidal ideation.
@guypbenson Most people who seek abortions already have children, and a common reason is that they already struggle to care for those kids.
If you don't understand this and work to alleviate that strain, then you don't actually care about reducing the number of abortions occurring here.
@baseballcrank @CassieFambro Please clarify what you mean by implying marriage->right to sex.
I have no right to impose my sexual desires upon my wife, and she has no obligation to entertain them. It's mutual desire, or it doesn't happen. Period.
@rico_rants Introspective conservatives have a hard time breaking out of local/regional bubbles, but the ones that do are almost always good follows. Testing your beliefs against someone who isn't just flinging dirt is a critical part of developing an ideology/coalition of like ideologies.
@roshpotato @sabestanbien @antiimperialrab The purpose of direct action is to provoke a reactionary response and grow into something larger and less passive. What's the value of provoking that response when it serves no purpose in achieving anything, and in fact only harms the cause? Only value here is to their own clout.
@NPRinskeep@penguinpress I read Lincoln: An Ethical Biography a few years back. The most fascinating aspect of the man to me is when and why he chose to stick his neck out, as opposed to the many times throughout his career that he did not. F. Douglass' perspective is critical, and shifted over his life.
@guypbenson Sanctions on Venezuela effect the poor and disadvantaged the most, while their corrupt leaders are insulated from the economic harm.
Targeted sanctions are one thing, but economic starvation in the middle and lower classes is a major reason they flee in the first place.
I don't believe you're filled with hatred if you have concerns about the equal participation of trans athletes--but that is what's behind this suit and these bans. Trans kids aren't trying to get a leg up on your kid. They're just fighting for the right to be kids themselves.
@greggnunziata@MichaelMcGough3 Glad you added this point, but to say that conservative media doesn't take those accusations seriously is to ignore decades of conservative media, in particular the last one.
Think about how the "socialism" conversation goes with your average GOP voter. It's their go-to.
@rico_rants People don't mind politely turning someone down, maybe even occasionally doing so more than once when signals get crossed.
It's the guys who ignore those rebuffs, or interpret them as some sort of game, that will experience real rejection.
In other words, just don't be creepy.
