Karan Thapar's lineage unfolds like a dark tapestry. His grandfather, Kunj Behari Thapar, was bestowed the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 1920, a grim token of loyalty amidst the blood-soaked aftermath of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre

His father, General Pran Nath Thapar, stands out as the only Indian Army Chief to have suffered defeat in the 1962 war against China. Pran Nath leveraged family ties—his wife's brother was married to Jawaharlal Nehru's niece—to ascend to the Army Chief position in 1961, only to resign in disgrace after the loss to China. This was a time when Gen. KS Thimayya was expected to retire, and Lt. Gen. SPP Thorat was the favored successor. However, Pran Nath's appointment changed the course of history. Notably, Gen. Thorat had warned about the 'Chinese Threat' back in 1959, but was dismissed as a warmonger by Nehru and his defense minister.
