When there is a change in mass due to the PM, the frequency of the input wave will change and be sensed by the receiver IDTs. The readout is a portable monitor for real-time changes in PM.

Actually, the material incorporated is barium titanate, which is lead free for human health and environmental reasons. The air flux will first pass through a PM classifier to filter out PM greater that 2.5 um.
