In 1985, there was this Kenyan named Eric Awori who claimed he drove a car in reverse from Mombasa to Nairobi. Eric announced he would drive 650 kilometers in reverse mode and the late Assistant Minister Shariff Naasir flagged off the start of the drive on December 11, 1985. Believing his story, companies like Westlands Motors gave him a brand new Toyota Corolla, while others donated cash and fuel. Eric later claimed he traveled to Auckland, New Zealand, to win a 400-mile reverse driving rally against international competitors and broke the Guinness World Record. He received a global award in a ceremony held at Hilton Hotel, where he announced to motor company executives that he planned to set another world breaking-record by reversing a 7-tonne lorry from Nairobi to Mombasa. Consequently, D.T. Dobie donated and fuelled a giant Mercedes Benz truck for Eric to use in the challenge. All hell broke loose when the New Zealand high commission in Nairobi said there was no such event in Auckland. It was established that Eric never travelled to New Zealand and no Guinness Book of Records representative came from Kenya. The self-made celebrity had received gifts worth millions of Shillings, air tickets, hotel accommodations and money. The police arrested Awori and charged him with fraud after he failed to provide any proof or photographs of his travels.
