At the end of December 1979, the Soviet Union sent 100 thousand of troops into Afghanistan and immediately assumed complete military and political control of Kabul and large portions of the country.

Both young and old Afghans made unprecedented sacrifices during the nearly decade-long war.

Tragically, over 1.5 million Afghans lost their lives, 2 million were left disabled, and up to 10 million went as refugees to other countries.
Ultimately, the Soviet Union was defeated and withdrew all its forces from Afghanistan on February 15, 1989.
