So in Nigeria, when a court is faced with the determination of a Child custody, the overriding consideration is the best interest and welfare of the child. There is no law that presumes that a female child is unsafe with her father simply because he is a man. While custody is mostly granted to mothers, particularly where the children are very young, this is not an automatic rule. The court considers the circumstances of each case, including the ability of each parent to properly care for and nurture the child.

A father can be granted custody of his female child where it is in the child’s best interest. Conversely, a mother can also be denied custody where there is evidence that her lifestyle, conduct, substance abuse, abandonment, instability or other circumstances make her unsuitable to have custody.Custody is also not determined solely by who has the greater financial capacity. The welfare of the child remains paramount.

And that comes with a responsibility not to mislead the public. This may not be intentional but in case of next time, make proper research.
