In this issue of Afghanistan, you will find my journal article where I argue that Lillias Hamilton, who was court physician to 'Abd al-Rahman Khan, practiced self-censorship when writing & talking about her erstwhile patient. (Kudos to @EdinburghUP staff & @AFG_Journal editors.)
Despite the #COVID19#Coronavirus crisis and #lockdown in #UK, the superb staff of @EdinburghUP have published #Afghanistan 3/1, 2020, on time 👏👏

No mention of the fact that Hamza was a Hazara? When Hazaras join and work for organisations, they resort to self-censorship and call it a “strategy?” Have the courage to think and talk beyond organisational lines and agendas.
Hamza was an incredible individual who stood with female protesters in Dashte Barchi. He cared about what was happening around him. We had several conversations.
Hamza was detained and tortured by the Taliban for his activism. I can’t believe he’s no longer with us. 💔
Is it any surprise that an unscrupulous Western Taliban mouthpiece West would suggest Taliban & Afg as a model for administering Syria? I had a feeling that Graeme or 1 of the other pro-Taliban loonies from Crisis Group would say something extremely stupid. And they did not fail!
A brutal regime falls. But there’s a problem: the UN and several countries say the victorious rebels are terrorists. What to do? There’s no playbook for Islamist insurgents faced with the challenges of running a country. But there is a precedent, in Afghanistan. 1/
A very typical example of how pervasive the denialism of Hazara genocide is both among ordinary citizens as well as “scholars” of Afghanistan. In both cases, it is out of a mixture of ignorance and hatred.
40 internal battles were fought under Abdur Rahman Khan mostly because he wanted to consolidate power & squash revolts all over the country including areas in Hazarajat & Kafiristan (Nooristan). Wasn't a policy against one group. This has been overlooked in the historiography...
The Taliban’s latest brainchild: criminalising shoes while using the podium because it is an “extravagance” & “a foreign practice”—all while flaunting extravagant Rolex watch & saturating themselves in Arabian oud. The Taliban are the embodiment of idiocy, regression & hypocrisy.
Walking on clean carpets with boots is both an extravagance and a foreign practice. Recently, Amirul Momineen Sheikh Sahib has specifically prohibited this through a special decree.
Our leaders are exemplary in obeying orders, often setting the standard for their people, and this has been a significant factor in our success.
The Taliban are an inherently misogynistic dictatorship. Their gender-based violence is much more than what gender-apartheid denotes. Torture & rape of women is at the core of their strategy to achieve compliance. Many women, after “interrogation” by the Taliban, commit suicide.
A young woman took her own life after being released from a Taliban prison in the central Bamyan province, local sources reported.
The victim, identified as 19-year-old Tahera, was subjected to abuse in a Taliban prison after members of the group forcibly detained her in the Panjab district’s Tagab Barg village a few days ago, sources cited.

Afghanistan, the world & reality: “The Taliban are riding roughshod, oppressing women & instituting gender apartheid.”
The Crisis Group poltroons, loonies and mouthpieces (Graeme & Watkins et al.): “Taliban listen and respond to the demands of the population.”
This is a great start on a topic that deserves more research: Taliban responsiveness to Afghan citizens. In short, the Taliban do not want to share power, but they listen and respond to demands from the population. @and_huh_what https://t.co/MIArfOCMve
One thing history has taught us is that failed rulers who lack internal support start wars in a bit to win back their citizen’s confidence. #Netanyahu is a case par excellence. He created conditions for a full-scale war only to portray himself as a saviour of the Israeli people.
At the start of Israel’s onslaughts against the Palestinians, Asad was, bewilderingly, defending Israel’s atrocities blinded by a blanket Islamophobia. It is good that he changed his views for the better and to this extent.
Hot to trot! Taliban’s PR Manager and the #TalibanGroup ready to whitewash Taliban’s connections with ISKP in the aftermath of terrorist attack in Russia. Who are you fooling @smithkabul?
My colleagues @CrisisGroup are working on analysis of the Islamic State claim of responsibility for the Moscow attack. It's worth noting that ISKP has not flourished under the Taliban, suffering losses of personnel and territory. This is @ACLED data, with our calculations.
Yes, this is an outrageous crime. But if not for this video, no one would have even known that it happened. This is a glimpse of this world's future. Even if you care nothing for Israel-Palestine, take a moment to care for your own tomorrow.
This is not okay.
You need to understand that the technical capability behind such killings is becoming increasingly easy to achieve—and increasingly automated. Soon enough, an official will drag their finger across a map, and anyone judged by a crude algorithm to have crossed that line will die.
Everyone in the world needs to see this.
Note that this footage permits no room for "it was a mistake," showing repeated, specifically-targeted strikes on the unarmed and even wounded. The sort of behavior the ICJ explicitly forbid in the genocide ruling against Israel.
This is the problem with the western discourse. Often times, the left-leaning activists like @mehdirhasan, when it comes to Afg, find themselves arguing for a barbarian Taliban rule (over a republican admin)—oblivious & ignorant of the country’s history & its people’s struggles.
"It got immeasurably worse very, very quickly for Afghan women."
Piers Morgan tells Mehdi Hasan why he thinks America's withdrawal from Afghanistan was 'disgraceful'.

The Crisis Group, when it comes to Afghanistan, has proved to be nothing more than a bunch of lowly Taliban-legitimisers cloaking in the name of “analysts.”
In @ForeignAffairs, @asfandyarmir and I explore the increasing normalization of Taliban by regional powers, led by China - and what that means for the US' assumption that diplomatic recognition is the greatest source of leverage.
(tl;dr: it likely isn't)
