Kaduna LPRES to Establish Milk Aggregation Centres Across the State

In a move to transform the dairy value chain and boost livelihoods of livestock-keeping communities, the Kaduna State Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (LPRES) has announced plans to establish Milk Aggregation Centres across key pastoralist settlements in the state.

The initiative is a major step in achieving one of the core objectives of the project is to revitalise the dairy production sector by improving milk collection, transportation, preservation, and market access for smallholder producers.

This plan is an extension of the ongoing Support to Sedentary Pastoralist Communities programme under the Kaduna LPRES, which has so far reached 19 sedentary pastoralist groups with critical interventions. These include solar-powered boreholes, pasture demonstration plots, tricycles, animal supplements and medicines, molasses, milking cans, fodder choppers, and residue crushers, all designed to enhance milk production and improve animal health.

To ensure that milk produced by these communities is safely preserved and efficiently aggregated for commercial offtakers, LPRES is introducing the concept of community-based Milk Collection Centres. These centres will be equipped with solar-powered cold storage systems that preserve milk quality and reduce spoilage, particularly in remote areas with limited access to electricity.

As part of preparations for this rollout, a team from the State Project Coordination Office recently embarked on a knowledge-sharing visit to a mini milk aggregation facility at Ladugga Crossing in Kachia Local Government Area. The centre, established by Nestlé Foods and managed under the supervision of Dr. Aliyu Lawal, features a low-cost, solar-powered refrigeration system and an insulated storage unit capable of holding over ten large milking cans.

Dr. Lawal explained how the setup has significantly reduced milk spoilage while improving the income of smallholder dairy farmers through reliable aggregation and delivery to buyers.

According to the State Project Coordinator Dr Shittu Hashim, insights from the Ladugga visit will inform the design and deployment of similar centres in targeted communities across Kaduna State. The goal is to strengthen the dairy supply chain, promote sustainable livestock production, and ensure that rural producers are fully integrated into the commercial dairy economy.

To improve public health and food safety, the kaduna state Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (KAD L-PRES), under the direction of the Kaduna State Government, has renovated and commissioned the Kawo Abattoir.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Murtala Dabo, said the upgraded facility will create jobs for youths and boost the state’s internally generated revenue.
