Several years ago, I dropped one of my brothers near a mall. He had to cross the street. As he was walking, a white lady at a traffic light frantically locked her car doors and rolled up her windows.
My brother was so livid. I was furious on his behalf. We both felt that hot, familiar anger…how dare she take a black man, any black man, for a thief, an attacker or an aggressor?
Later, we sat and spoke about the insult of it all. How dare a foreigner in our land, whose forefathers stole this very soil, look at my brother and think like that? We asked ourselves: So every black man is a possible thief? Attacker? A possible rapist? A hijacker? A likely killer?

I am terrified to admit that over the years, I have become that white lady.

Now, when I see a brother running across the street, umbilini uyenyuka. My chest tightens. I quickly lock my car doors and I roll up the windows.

I immediately tell my young daughter to hide her phone, terrified that guy might smash the car windows.

I just stare at the traffic light, praying it turns green quickly, desperate to escape an adverse possibility that hasn't even happened yet.

I can’t even take my daughter to a park during quiet times anymore. The moment we see a brother, a black man approaching us or just walking towards us, we panic. We never assume he will protect us from the possible dangers of this world. Our entire bodies, our instincts, believe that he is likely the danger.
At some point, I had to look at my own brother and say: That white lady had every reason to be afraid of you, mntasekhaya.

Yes, it’s not all of you.

But we are being killed by our brothers. We are being maimed by our uncles. We are being abused by our boyfriends. We are being let down by our fathers. It’s people who look like us, the ones who are supposed to love us, who are brutally dragging young women to their graves in their prime.

This conversation is actually fascinating to me.

To my community: why does gaining weight and muscle suddenly mean I’m “turning masc”? Was being smaller automatically feminine? And if so… who taught us that?

And outside of the community, I’m noticing something too. Gents, why does looking more traditionally masculine suddenly make me more readable as your “bro”? 😂 I was your bro before the muscles. Bathong… eh hayi Nina…

What I find interesting is that queer and straight people seem to be responding to the same conditioning: that masculinity has a LOOK. Bigger. Muscular. Less soft. More traditionally “manly.”

So it makes me wonder… how much of what we call masculinity or femininity is actually who somebody is, and how much of it is a role we assign them based on whether their body makes us comfortable?

Because if gaining muscle changes how you perceive my masculinity… maybe the interesting change isn’t actually happening in me. 👀

There has never been a schools shortage in the country. I have always argued. The problem is that the economy is concentrated in Gauteng everyone moves there and it makes it seem like schools are overcrowded in South Africa which is not the case.

Schools are overcrowded in Gauteng but not in the whole country. Two different things. What we need to do is to decentralize the economy from Gauteng and develop the rest of the country. Build industries, modernize our towns into functional cities etc and then you solve this internal migration crisis.
